Hi,
My daughter has been very stressed with her physics work lately and her school are not teaching her at all but just expecting her to teach herself gcse content. Would really appreciate if someone could explain these 3 questions as I was terrible at physics in school and feel bad I cannot help.
Thanks so much in advance!

I'm rubbish at physics too so can't help with the questions but has she tried Bitesize, In a Nutshell, some papers and answers are on physicsandmathstutor.com,

  1. Kinetic energy = 0.5 x mass x speed^2 Kinetic energy = 0.5 x 1200 x 30^2 Kinetic energy = 0.5 x 1200 x 900

The Unit is Joules (J)

  1. Gravitational Potential Energy = mass x gravity x height Gravitational Potential Energy = 25 x 9.8 x 2

The unit is Joules (J)

  1. Elastic potential energy = 0.5 x constant x change in position^2 Elastic potential energy = 0.5 x 200 x 0.1^2 Elastic potential energy = 0.5 x 200 x 0.01

The unit is Joules

  1. This is combination of the gravitational potential and kinetic energy formulas

Total Energy = 0.5 x mass x speed^2 + mass x gravity x height
Total Energy = 0.5 x 0.75 x 30^2 + 0.75 x 9.8 x 20

As said above, BBC Bitesize has some great resources for physics, which will give a much greater understanding than the equations I have given above.

Thanks, yes I will try and motivate her to look on there for help. She is always procrastinating though! I was the same in secondary school too!!!Confused

Thank-you very much!! The working out is very helpful for her!SmileSmileSmile

I thought you were asking for psychic helpGrin

That’s what I thought too. My psychic powers tell me your child is about to raid the biscuit tin in the top cupboard next to the fridge freezer due to the stress of the math..... Grin

Loll! You must be psychic because she was raiding the biscuit tin! SmileSmile

The calculations are simple maths but your DD needs to know which equations she needs to have of by heart and be familiar with the equations that are provided on the equations insert. Here's a link to sheets for AQA:
www.physicstutoronline.co.uk/gcse-physics-equations/

It's a bit concerning that she has had to self study and has no idea about how to answer these questions, even if she hasn't memorised the equations that she needs to learn by heart. Obviously it's not your DD's fault if she is getting no teaching. She should be able to identify that if she is being asked to do a calculation she needs an equation and then pick out the key words/subject and google or look them up in her text book though eg physics GCSE kinetic energy equation.

Sorry if that comes across as very harsh. I really sympathise with all the DC struggling with trying to learn at home with little or no guidance. It does sound like she is really struggling. Could it be that she doesn't understand the maths and doesn't know how to do the calculations? Does she need to revise BODMAS?

OP if the biscuit tin really is in the top cupboard next to the fridge freezer that’s freak me right out ha ha! Grin

That’d. Stupid autocorrect.
Didn’t see that coming ironically...!
