My DD has always struggled with maths but I feel it's more a confidence mental issue.x because when she sits down and isn't worried she can do it...
Anyway I'm having a struggle knowing what to do with her first maths homework as she is saying she doesn't like the teacher...

If you haven't already got one, but a CSG KS3 maths guide.
Then try youtube corbettmaths

Plus remember starting y7 is a big thing, especially this year.

Since its the first one, I'd sit with her. I know you won't want to do it every time, but since it is a big change, I'd get her to show you her notes from the lesson, praise how neat they are, and stay with her, just until she gets going.

Or pop her at the kitchen table with it while you're cooking or something? She'll be less likely to panic if you're there.

I don’t quite understand what doing the set homework has to do with not liking the teacher.

If she doesn’t know what it is asking her to do, have a look at Corbett Maths online.

If you can afford it, a term of tutoring might boost her confidence, or if not, but some study guides.

It's the first week of a new school, new system, after a long time out of school routine, with new teachers and new expectations. Maths is just going to be the start if it unfortunately.

Just sit with her, lots of calm words and praise, no panic. It will take a while for her to get the hang of it.

Regarding the teacher, she has probably seem them for a few hours at most. Secondary teachers are very different to primary; speak to kids with different tones, have different rules, may be a bit tougher as they are used to dealing with mouthy 14 year olds. It will just take time to adjust to so many teachers having different styles.

Can you afford a maths tutor once a week? We got one for my grandson and it gave him huge a huge boost of confidence. If not, it doesn't hurt to sit with her while you have a cuppa so she can bounce ideas off you.
