Kumon adding up numbers technique

Hi, my daughter is doing maths (Kumon) and she's currently doing additions with numbers under 30, plus 2.

My husband taught her to count out loud, then write down the result, like:

eleven, so eleven, twelve, thirteen equals thirteen

or

six, so six, seven, eight, then writes down eight.

Is this practice good or bad? It's pissing me off because they've started on the wrong foot and when she's going to start adding numbers bigger than 2, this is going to be a drawback.

My argument is that she should rather do it more automatically, in her head, so the whole process should be pretty much from the memory but use her brain for these steps, if this makes any sense.

Is your kumon branch doing video calls? I'd schedule a call for your daughter and sit in on it. My eldest has been doing kumon for more than 4 years and I've learnt my lesson not to interfere in techniques as kumon has a very particular way of doing things. I'm sorry I cant remember how it was taught at that stage.

How old is she?
Teacher here.
I'd use a number line first so she can visualise the numbers.
The photo I've uploaded is starting with single digit numbers. To add on numbers less than 30, she needs a number line to 30. E.g. 17+2, start at 17 then draw 2 jumps to land on 19.
She may need lots of practice at doing the jumps before she can get it 'in her head'
Children learn by concrete, pictorial then abstract.

I am not too sure "namechange34", I will give them a call!

She will be 5 in September, Soontobe60.

She's doing it decently, the method is what I think it's wrong!

She can easily say what's 24 + 2, for example, but my husband taught her to count out loud whilst she's doing it, which is where I think the problem will be in the future.

If she has instant recall of 24+2 without the need to work it out then she's doing ok, but I agree, her DF could confuse her. Can she easily do 29+2?

I've just asked her, she took her time but she replied in about 6 seconds.

Thank you.
