Your own typing is a bit sketchy tbh (not an insult, it’s just making things more difficult) - could you attach a screen shot just in case that’s what’s causing the confusion?

I’d say that the text quoted is close enough to “before December-time comes along” which to my mind means “by midnight on November 30th”.

JustGiveMeTwoMinutes · 08/12/2019 15:10

Given that no-one recognises that sentence as a regular English sentence that anyone might say, there is no right answer apart from what the person who actually wrote it intended to mean

JustGiveMeTwoMinutes · 08/12/2019 15:12

It's a bit alice in wonderland!

ColdTattyWaitingForSummer · 08/12/2019 15:13

Could the whole point of it be that it’s an ambiguous sentence? I remember doing a similar exercise at college, and it was basically to show us how important clarity is in writing.

Onesnowballshort · 08/12/2019 15:13

If there is no sheet or paperwork, as you said, then does the problem possibly lie with how your child copied it down?
Don't embarrass your S4 child by getting straight onto the school about this, please!

coconuttelegraph · 08/12/2019 15:21

Why are you spending so much effort on a year 4's homework? Surely you write that you son doesn't understand it and send it back or the teacher won't know they aren't being clear.

When my DC were at primary the teacher would say they waned to know if the child didn't understand rather than think they were fine because the parent was doing the homework - always seemed very sensible to me.

ColdTattyWaitingForSummer · 08/12/2019 15:25

@coconuttelegraph in this situation year 4 means 4th year or s4 so secondary age, roughly year 10 or 11 equivalent. So definitely old enough to discuss with the teacher themselves if they don’t understand!

coconuttelegraph · 08/12/2019 15:44

Thank you coldtatty I didn't know that year 4 in Scotland wasn't the same as year 4 in England.

In that case his mother should not be doing his homework Shock

Preciosaundostres · 08/12/2019 15:52

I have to help him with his homework he has learning difficulties and is in low grade classes thats why i am on here just asking for some input !! If you don’t have it written down then surely him having copied it down wrong is far more likely than his English teacher having given him gibberish to comprehend.

Lollygaggles · 08/12/2019 15:58

Before December starts

viques · 08/12/2019 16:04

OP please come back when you have got this sorted and share the teachers explanation for setting homework in Advanced Gibberish!

Another thought , maybe kids these days are being tested on their skill in making sense of sentences written in predictive text...

Preciosaundostres · 08/12/2019 17:01

I will do "viques" hahaha its definately a puzzler !! Yeah it could have been written down wrong im sure we will figure it out eventually aaaagggghhhhh !!
