How much homework is normal for year 2

My DD is in yr2 at a London school and whilst she seems very happy and I love the teachers and school ethos, I am surprised by just how much homework she gets. 14 spellings to learn each week, a set of maths and English tasks each weekend as well as reading every night. I am more than happy to do all this with her but getting her to sit and do homework is like pulling teeth. She is starting to really hate homework. She has school clubs until 4.30pm two days a week so there isn't much time to do it when she isn't tired from the school day. Is this excessive or just what's expected from kids these days - I don't recall getting homework at all until I was older? Also any tips on how you get your kids to concentrate would be very helpful! Thank you!

Get her to allocate a toy for each different homework. A toy "saying" they want to do spellings with her is always more appealing than Mum saying they have to do homework.

IMO, learning lists of spellings is a laborious way to learn to spell and, I suspect, fairly ineffectual. Reading lots is a better way, as they pick up the look of the letters in words without noticing.

Could she do a couple of words at breakfast or on the way to school each day, so she is not tired and not having to learn a whole list?

Reading at home and challenges on active learn and 10 spellings a week is what our school expect in y2.

In our house reading happens every day. Spellings and active learn happen once a week, usually at the weekend as we have more time.

We do the reading book at bedtime. DS reads his, then I read something more interesting.

Spellings we do on the way to school, so ‘what’ ‘ w h a t’ style.

Bribery by something fun once homework is finished?

We also do homework after dinner. So when we get home from school it is playtime, then once everyone has had a bit of a rest and refuelled, then homework.

Writing an essay is an essential part of any academic process. If you do not know how to write an impressive content so you should better hire expert-writers.net and get some assistance.

We had 15 mins reading a night and 6 spellings a week in Y2.

DD has reading, library books from school, spellings and learning parts for assembly and plays every so often and tables at that age.

DD also did after school clubs and then tea and then homework. Sometimes there was a writing task. Forgot that! This was 20 years ago but we fitted it in when required.

Its changed a lot with the new curriculum DS in Year 2 and he has far more to do than his sister who is in Year 6 (changed as she went into Year 3)

But I do what he wants - if the homework is just a sentence its just a sentence!

My dd’s in year 2, she has 10 spellings to learn a week, reading at least 3 times a week and either tasks to do on the Mathletics website or a homework task in her book once a week.
