Is this too much for year 1 ?

My 5 year old is currently bringing home this homework every week

  • 5 new words to learn to spell
  • handwriting exercise
  • a maths challenge worksheet
  • 2 phoneme worksheets
Plus a new reading book every night. It feels way too much , we have parents evening next week and I want to articulate why I feel it's too much but am not sure what to say. I don't want to sound like a whingey parent with a PFB ! But she is only 5 and she needs some down time. What do other people's year 1 children bring home ?

There has been a couple of threads on this over the last week. Maybe try advanced search.

I would also google research into the effectiveness of hmk. Hmk is often given to keep parents happy rather than the school thinks it’s a good idea.

My year 1 dd (5) has

10 spellings
A number bond sheet
English sheet
Maths sheet with about 15 questions

Her reading book is changed as she finishes it, sometimes 2 books a week and sometimes 3

We dont always do all of the homework. If we dont have time or she is struggling i just leave it tbh she is so little

InDubiousBattle · 05/02/2019 07:11

Far too much imo. I'd do the reading books and the spellings. What would actually happen if you just didn't do the rest? My d's is in reception and we're given 3 books a week and a homework 'menu' we're supposed to pick 8 things to do off. Quite a few parents do just a couple if things, some do none, some do absolutely all if it.

superking · 05/02/2019 07:14

DS1 in Y1 has his reading book changed 3x a week. Literacy homework is weekly and takes about 15 minutes. One bigger piece of "topic" homework every half term which usually takes 1-2 hours total.

I wouldn't be happy with the amount your DC is being asked to do.

rainbowstardrops · 05/02/2019 07:16

Are you sure your DD is expected to do it all? In my year 2 class, the children are given a fair few activities on a Friday but they can do as much or as little as they like. They bring in what they have completed and are then given dojos for each piece of work they bring in. Some children do it all and some don't do any.
All of the children are expected to read at home at least three times a week but again, some read lots and some parents don't bother to write in their reading diary at all which I always find a bit sad.

Hi my y1 my dc had 1 reading book a week (I wished for more so use library) and 5 spelling words and some simple maths (sometimes colouring in).
Homework is not compulsory, it’s more important to enjoy learning, it’s a marathon not a sprint!

GerryblewuptheER · 05/02/2019 07:18

That's far too much.

What do they do for 6 hours a day if there that much outstanding work to do....

Spellings are pointless they are forgotten as soon as they are done.

Definitely raise it.

Anything that means they don't get dinner at a sensible time, enough exercise and fresh air and an early night for some.sleep , will do far more damage learning wise than whether or not they did a work sheet.

And no that's not a dig at anyone who works. The work side cant be avoided. Its absolutely necessary. But this can.

Families struggle enough as it is these days through no fault of their own. Previous minutes together shouldn't be wasted learning words they will have forgotten by the morning

My year 1 dd gets ten spellings to learn on a Monday which are tested on the Friday, we have to read at least 3 times a week and they send home on a Thursday occasionally (twice since back from Christmas) a homework task which is normally maths based. This week it was comparing things that are taller or shorter. We did about 6 sentences and that was it. This has to be handed in on the Monday.

We also have a mathletics logon but don’t do it as much as we should.

Logoplanter · 05/02/2019 07:24

Sounds like too much to me.

DD is also Y1 and gets:

2 reading books changed once a week. They tell you to spend 10 minutes a day reading with you child.
10 spellings given on Friday and then tested the following Friday
A sheet of homework to do over the whole term. There is normally 10 items on it and they like them to do 5 and they get a dojo point each one done and a little prize if they are all done. The content of them varies between doing a bit of research on school 360, practising a number/phonics game, making a model etc.

Logoplanter · 05/02/2019 07:26

Should have added DS is year 3 and only gets:

10 spellings on a Monday to be tested on a Friday.
Maths work done online, given on Friday to be done for the following Friday.
Reading books I think. He's a very good reader now and I have to say I don't listen to him read very often. I need to get back in the habit of doing it.

newcupcake · 05/02/2019 09:54

Thanks for all the replies it's really helpful. It is sent home with the idea it all gets done , although I know not everyone will do it because that's just life. I just feel this immense sense of duty and trying to do the best by her but also don't agree with it at all !! Reading for sure but the other bits I really don't agree with !

yes it seems a bit much...
Mine gets 10 spellings on spelling bee each week
Some maths on mymaths but this is usually just once a fortnight or can even be every 3 weeks
Reading book is changed once a week but they would like some reading every day
I try to complete those but its happened when I haven't because we've been super busy or feeling ill and there's been no fallout...

IVEgottheDECAF · 05/02/2019 11:12

After thinking about this more this morning ive realised my 5 year old actually gets as much homework as ds2 (age 9, year 5) Obviously his is harder but you would think she would have less surely!

thismeansnothing · 05/02/2019 11:17

My DD is yr2

But last year weekly homework was :-

10 spellings to be practiced at least 3 times
Spellings worksheet
Reading every night for 10mins
To use mathsshed when they can fit it in
A half termly project

JillGoodacre · 05/02/2019 13:01

My son is in year 1 in an international school that follows the national curriculum. He gets ten spellings on a Sunday that he has to write every day and learn and he has to put these words in a sentence. He gets handwriting practice and a piece based on whatever topic they're doing (eg today he had to draw a picture of him doing is dream job and write a few sentences about it). His maths home work is done on an app called mathletics.

JillGoodacre · 05/02/2019 13:02

Oh and reading booms changed twice welly but he reads his own books nightly to me as well

spinabifidamom · 07/02/2019 20:23

Yes this is waay too much for a small child of that age. I don’t expect my stepdaughter to do more than thirty minutes each day. We read for about fifteen minutes each night and occasionally she is asked to do a math worksheet. I also make up some questions on what we are currently reading. Those usually are typed on my laptop and printed out.
Spelling is twice a month. I have not started giving homework tasks for other subjects yet.
I recommend talking with the teacher. Maybe they can help you.

I actually wish dd would get more homework, but I think even she would struggle to get all that done.
In yr1 she gets a reading book for us to read to her and a book for her to read, purple level, so it takes a couple of sittings. They can change these as soon as they are done, so probably gets 3-4 a week. There's a word wallet which doesn't seem to change and has hundreds of words in it. No maths or anything else.
The school has just been Ofsted'd and found lacking yet again Sad

eeyore228 · 23/12/2019 06:20

We had similar when Emmy DD’s were in Year 1. Is your DD struggling or resisting? Is it taking too long? Normally this is revisiting work they have done in the week so it shouldn’t be new. Explain why your DD I struggling and the teacher should help.
