Please help. Admittedly, I’m rubbish at maths but surely this question needs more information like how many colours are on the spinner?

Q: If the relative frequency of getting a ‘blue’ on a spinner is 0.1, how many reds would you expect to get in 50 spins?

When you phrase the answer put it in terms of: “Assuming the only two colours are red and blue...”
Or make life easy for yourself and say “Assuming there is no red on the spinner...” Grin

Assume same probability for red 0.1 so in 50 spins it would be 0.1 x50 = 5

Thanks.

It is usual to get 12?year olds to make assumptions like that though. Seems a bit of a biggish ask. Don’t think my 12 year old would. There’s not much space in the answer box to explain assumptions - just enough for the numerical answer

I think the message assumes that you know that each colour appears only once in a spinner. Doesn't matter how many colours are there on it. I've seen similar ones when my DD prepped for 11 plus, so yes.

Bubblysqueak · 19/11/2017 17:16

Would the red not be 0.9 so as to make up the 'whole of the spinner if no other colours are mentioned? So it would be 0.9x50=answer ?

I don't think it's particularly difficult question for 12 year old, tbh. No twist or complicated calculations.

Artistic · 20/11/2017 20:59

Bubbly - for your assumption to be right you’d need a spinner with 10 colour options of which 1 would be blue & 9 would be red. Don’t think that’s a logical assumption for a spinner.

XmasInTintagel · 21/12/2017 10:55

With no further info, i think the only way for the information provided on red to allow you to calculate an answer would be if the rest of the spinner that wasn't red, was blue, so 0.9 of it.

If its so easy, could you indulge us and tell us, how any colours are on the spinner, in what proportion, and how you know this??
