11 year old has come home with maths homework to convert money. I am a little stuck can do on a calculator but cannot do in my head and unable to explain to somebody else.
The question is
I can buy 240 pesetas for £1 how many will 408 cost me.
Anyone able to shine some light? Long division not my strong point and I don't think it was covered much at primary school.

work out how much a pesata costs.

dive £1 by 240

(100/240)= 0.416pence

1 peseta cost 0.416 pence.

mulitply 0.416 by 408 = 169.728

divide by 100 to get £s

£1.69728

rounding up
£1.70

Do you think as a year 7 they are expected to do this in their head? Rather than use a calculator. This is the difficult part!

Might it be a typo? Maybe the number should be 480 not 408 then they would be able to do it in their head easily.

It would say "no calculators"

The typo version would be easy for a year 4!

If you do both of Binarys steps in on, you can do some serious simplification.

So you need (all in pence)
100*408/240.

Divide top and bottom by 10.
So 10408/24
Then keep halving the 408 and 24 til you get to
10
51/3
Divide top and bottom by 3, and you get
10*17/1

So 170p, or £1.70
