History year 7 "why are people poor today?" All our answers seem a bit deep

In a paragraph?

Dd does know were to begin and I am struggling.

So relative poverty and absolute poverty ? and the welfare state? There shouldn't really be poverty?

Am I off the mark? it seems a bit deep. They have been studying the black death and the after math.

it's only year 7??

In world or UK?

WowOoo · 18/01/2015 11:25

What have they covered in school? Get dc to write notes on this and then flesh it out with a bit more research /input from you.

A paragraph can be brief.

Sorry in the uk.

Just been talking about minimum and living wage.

Artisans and labourers and trade have been the focus of this terms lessons.

Thanks woo.

I studied socail policy and tend to lean things this way. I am really over thinking it and not helping dd,\ because what I'm saying had no relevance to what she has been studying. She is never given her book to bring home so its down to her recall abilities which are better than I thought!

Dds instinct was about trade, wages, government and population. She is researching now.

Thanks again

Many people are surviving on benefits which means they have a limited income. People on the minimum wage or even above that have a limited income. Poor people have costs that exceed their income, hence they struggle financially. When the statistics say there are X number of children living in poverty, how is that measured ? We have a low wage economy in some part, so family costs exceed earnings so difficult spending decisions have to be made . This means people are unable to buy essential items. The political argument is how to stop this and ensure the standard of living is above poverty levels for everyone. People who are labourers are likely to earn less than artisans. Artisans have greater skilks. Improved levels of trade mean increased production and greater employment. Better wages follow if you have a skill in demand .

Those with less than 60 per cent of median income are classified as poor.
This ‘poverty line’ is the agreed international measure used throughout the
European Union.

The reason there are people in poverty because this definition means its impossible to not have people in poverty

FriendofBill · 11/04/2015 22:11

Housing is a major contributory factor.

smokepole · 11/04/2015 22:12

Cdtary. I have just had to write a 'similar' essay about Friedrich Hayek for my OU Social Science Degree. ! Explaining that less than 60% of Median income being poor for year 7 is a bit Advanced.... Obviously not the childs work......
