French homework query

Hi, I have a quick question regarding my daughter's French homework, she wrote "j'aime ma ville car c'est jolie et interessante" but the teacher has crossed out the e on the end of jolie and interessante to make them masculine - should they not be feminine as they refer to ville? Many thanks if anyone can advise.

I would say you're right and the teacher is wrong. I live out here but my French it a bit shit though.

You are right and the teacher is wrong, I think (relying on rusty A Level French here though...)

The adjectives are agreeing with the 'ce' in 'c'est'. If your daughter had written 'j'aime ma ville elle est jolie et intéressante' she would have been right.
Think of 'c'est beau la vie'.

LePetitPont · 23/09/2014 20:07

I think because she's used the "car c'est" construction - so the adjectives are agreeing with ce which is neutral.

Ma ville est jolie et interessante would take the adj agreements.

Nb for extra points, your daughter could use beau rather than joli Smile

Thanks all for your help!

If you use c'est then it's always going to be masculine singular, as ce (it) is the subject of the phrase. If she had said car elle est jolie et intéressante then it would have been ok.

We say :

" La ville est jolie et interessante
==> Ville is feminine singular == > adjective ends with -e

BUT

C'est joli et interessant
no -e as "C'est " is an impersonal expression (Contraction of "cela est")
