Year 3 Maths
60.

cafecito · 11/03/2014 19:45

10,000,000?

Hulababy · 11/03/2014 19:45

What are the other questions on the homework?
Do they not give a clue as to the complexity expected?

TheKnightsThatSayNee · 11/03/2014 19:46

It's 70 but I'm pretty sure they mean 60. I'm glad I'm not at school anymore.

cafecito · 11/03/2014 19:47

however 60 is 6 x 10 of course - y3 = probably60

Creamycoolerwithcream · 11/03/2014 19:48

I thought they use the word greater sometimes instead of times or lots of to add a bit of variety.

BathTangle · 11/03/2014 19:49

I wondered if they meant 6 to the power 10, but my "pretty good at maths" Y3 DS1 immediately said 60, so I suspect that it's the standard vocab.

Fuck, i hate maths but need to know the answer now!!

Floggingmolly · 11/03/2014 19:52

I'm going with 70

mirtzapine · 11/03/2014 19:53

2

6 x 2 > 10 (12)

6 x 1 < 10 (6)

6 x 1.667 is approximately equal to 10

Refoca · 11/03/2014 19:57

I think 28. It's got a certain je ne c'est quoi compared with 10, don't you think? If any number is 6 times greater than 10, I reckon that must be it. :-D

As for the maths...at that level I would ask that they keep the language simpler. If Oxford expect a reasoned debate, why is anyone asking a class of 7-8 year olds?

mirtzapine · 11/03/2014 19:57

if you read it as what is the minimum whole number that multiplied by six is greater than ten then it is two.

if you read it as what number is greater than the minimum number that is greater than the multiplication of six by ten then it would be eleven 6 x 10 = 60. 6 x11 = 66.

FrequentFlyerRandomDent · 11/03/2014 19:58

Will watch out for the update.

Creamycoolerwithcream · 11/03/2014 19:58

Just googled it. It's 60.

Floggingmolly · 11/03/2014 20:02

It's badly worded. 6 times 10 is sixty. 6 times greater than 10 is surely seventy?

CoteDAzur · 11/03/2014 20:04

Very badly worded question.

"Six times greater than" doesn't really mean anything, but it sounds like they wanted the answer 10 + (6 x 10) = 70.

Creamycoolerwithcream · 11/03/2014 20:04

60 is 6 times greater than 10.

CoteDAzur · 11/03/2014 20:04

No, it isn't.

60 is 6 times 10.

ThatBloodyWoman · 11/03/2014 20:05

Still don't understand the 70 answer.

Mind you it wouldn't suprise me if my maths ability is only around y3 level.....

Breezy1985 · 11/03/2014 20:07

I just asked my yr3 ds he said 60, so I'll say 60 Grin

TeaAndALemonTart · 11/03/2014 20:08

It's most definitely 60.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 11/03/2014 20:09

I'm guessing as it's year 3 then they're looking for 60. Either that or the answer is 70 and ds will be labelled as a maths genius. Grin

Hula: the other questions include:

Find the total of 22 and 19.
Find the difference between 45 and 27.
How many is a fifth of 100?
Decrease 5000 by 450.

Easy.

There is also:

"What number is five times more than nineteen?" (Which is along the same lines as "what number is six times greater than 10?")

Dh has explained the last one in biscuit terms. Eg If I've got one biscuit and you have 5 times MORE biscuits than the number of biscuits I have got, then you have 6 biscuits.

So if I have 19 biscuits and you have 5 times MORE than that, then you have 19 biscuits PLUS (5 times 19). Because it's MORE THAN.

And all I have left to add for tonight is Biscuit

Grin

Will update tomorrow.
