And it doesn't even involve numbers. DD has to put together two triangles (without overlapping them or adding any other shapes) to make a hexagon. For the life of me I can't see how to do this - I can get 6 sides but not 6 sides and 6 angles. Someone with more spatial awareness/common sense/maths than me please put me out of my misery before morning Confused.

Put them together like you're making a diamond.

Then slide the conjoined edges so they're off centre, and you have an irregular hexagon.

(Hope that made sense).

Put two sides of the triangles together but shift them along a little so that a corner is poking out at each side.

Are you sure it's not two triangles and a rectangle?

Because that is the rectangle on it's end with a triangle either side.

Meditrina explained it far better than me!

ChippingInNeedsSleepAndCoffee · 07/10/2013 20:45

Does she have to make a hexagon or a hexagram?

You are wonderful! DD will be shown how to get a hexagon tomorrow (and I shall pass it off as me having worked it out of course). Thank you so much. I am considering giving my degree (not maths of course) back and resigning from my as if I can't manage year 3 work I am clearly a fraud Grin.

I would say to cut out two triangles and let yout dd have a go before you tell her the answer. For a hint, you could remind her that the sides and angles don't have to be the same as the question does not say regular hexagon. It just needs six sides.

I got 2 A levels and an S level at Maths and I wouldn't have been able to work it out. At year 3 I guess no one would, it's just so they go "Ah!" when they're shown.
