am I supposed to go over homework with DC?

DS primary 6 got great effort for his homework. It wasn't a great effort. It was careless and lazy. Teacher only picked up 3 mistakes out of at least 12. This is the same teacher who says he is doing really well. If the standard of homework produced is similar to his schoolwork, he is most definitely not doing well. I have tried to talk to the teacher before and I come up against how well he is doing. I usually go over his work with him, correcting it together. I stopped doing this to make the teacher aware that perhaps he is being lazy at home. I was shocked to see her praising badly done work. Should I go in to see teacher and show her what I think is badly done homework?

Woah there tiger mom. What kind of errors do you think he's making that the teacher hasn't picked up? Whst is said when you have discussed homework before?

It was a straightforward put in the punctuation text. Errors were easy to see. Normally, between the two of us, we work things out and correct them so the teacher gets work he has put a lot of effort into. It was while doing homework I realised he has very little understanding of what he is learning. I don't want him to be spending ages doing more work at home. I spoke to the teacher saying I was worried about how he seems to be struggling. Teacher was clear he is doing well. It really isn't the impression I get from him.

OK then it's probably best to make an appointment to discuss it.

I can't decide whether DS is flannelling me and just being lazy with homework. He has to do more work if I get involved though, then I worry because I think he isn't grasping basics, then I think P6! He will be in high school soon........ and round I go.........

I think you are right. I need to see what he produces in class. What if that is lacking effort? Do I just disagree and point out work I think is not up to P6 standard? He has been very good at hiding the fact he doesn't understand things and doesn't like to draw attention to himself.

As a teacher I would not highlight 12 mistakes in one piece of work to a child as they would become very disheartened. Instead I would highlight mistakes of a comman theme and make the child's target to work on this issue.

ghostonthecanvas · 30/09/2013 19:57

I agree not to highlight all the mistakes. Would be very confusing. I just looked again at the work. One mistake was corrected. Some sentences made no sense at all and she marked it 'great effort'. Surely this is the wrong message to give him?

At my school homework marking is usually of the 'tick and flick' variety. I'm unusual in giving it a bit more attention. I wouldn't pick out all 12 errors though. Maybe it was a great effort compared to the previous 5 that'd been marked?

ghostonthecanvas · 03/10/2013 09:01

I hope not ihatespiders. That would mean his previous work would have been practicality non-existent! I never went over the homework with him after the teacher wrote that. I simply raised an eyebrow and DS had the good grace to look sheepish. Part of the problem is he is so lazy. I think I will wait til next parents evening. I am going to concentrate on going over the basics with him. Earlier P4 work and some handwriting. M&S have some good books.

When I said 'the previous five' I meant the five bits from classmates who were less diligent so the teacher was pleased to find a decent one in the batch. I was MNing during a break from marking some very variable homework!

Oooh! I see. I never thought about that. Blimey. Feel a bit better now Grin

I can see that if there are 12 errors, a teacher might focus on clearing up just three for now. She has a whole year to get him better at punctuation, and he has several more to reach the level you operate at. (Or at which you operate, if you prefer.)
