Reading reward for a sticker-phobic child - any good ideas?

Hi

My DD is Y2 and reading just fine, however, I would like to make the effort to encourage her more this year as she does view it as a chore.

She is sticker-phobic, really hates them, sees absolutely not value in them at all so a reward chart is totally lost on her. This all started when she was in and out of hospital for allergy testing, they always use stickers so from a very young age she associated stickers as a bad day at the hospital and usually needles.

So, how can I help her record her progress and encourage nightly reading without charts or stickers. Anyone have any good ideas?

Many thanks

Use stamps instead of stickers? Although that would still be using a chart.

Pasta jar.
Piece of macaroni (other pasta shapes are available :o ) which she can see getting bigger every time she earns a piece. Then every however many pieces can be exchanged for a treat.

Mama - :) sadly yes, stamps fall under the same remit as stickers with DD.

Isla - like it, then its very visual too, and a good use of Maths - hahahaha, god help me if I become homework obsessed, she is only Y2 ...

Little badges? You can get them from sticker websites like PTS. My son is not all that fussed on stickers either and we are trying to find something he will respond to!

Marbles?

WowOoo · 10/09/2013 11:39

Was going to suggest marbles as Damnautocorrect said.

Mine like to be able to choose which one goes into the jar.

I read that it was meant to be purely for positive praise and I try to use it to encourage all sorts of good behaviour.

Dh sometimes threatens to take one away. I haven't done this, but it seemed to work for him. They get a little bit of pocket money if they have enough in jar at the end of the week. Bribery basically!

Panzee - what is PTS? Thanks.

Damn - marbles is a good idea too thanks!

I think it's primary teacher supplies, I google PTS stickers to find it.

Got it Panzee - thanks

How about a sticker chart in reverse? A full sticker chart that she gets to tear a sticker off when done her reading. You could make a joke of killing the pukey pink fairy stickers or some such?

BlueBumedFly · 11/09/2013 22:07

Haha - love that!!!

What about one of the lego sets? She could collect it a piece at a time.

Willshome · 13/10/2013 19:09

A collecting box for a good cause? I can see money is a slippery slope if she's getting it herself. But 2p a time for something she personally values might work.
