Telling the time. How many times do we need to go over this?

DD almost 8. She just doesn't get telling the time.

Has an exam tomorrow, and she still doesn't get it.

We have done it again, and again, and yet again.

Any tips?

What doesn't she get? Does she know her 5x table?

She gets past, but not to. It doesn't matter how many times we go over it. Rather than say 1/4 to 5, she will say 1/4 to 4, or 5.45.

Take the minute hand off and get her to learn how to tell the time without.

This will not be helpful but I finally learned when I was about 13/14.

Ds1 who is 13 with ASD is finally getting there. He has learnt at least three times since he was 6 but somehow managed to forget again.
Ds2 is 9 and everything clicked into place once he was given a digital watch. He understands time completely now, including 24 hour.
I've always found it a very taxing part of parenting along with teaching them how to ride a bike (apparently impossible).

Telling the time is very tricky, actually.

I was no good at it as a child, but now I have a maths degree.

So, don't worry about the test, just keep helping her in a low key way, when it's relevant to the situation.

I think she probably did ok in the test after all (hopeful). I have found a tell the time clock on amazon which I will get.
