What are number bonds?

Ds1 in year 3 is struggling and his teacher asked me to revise with him. I blithely said no problem and hurried on. But I don't have clue. Have wiki'd but no clearer.

Number facts to help you add and take away quickly.

So...

0 + 10 = 10
1 + 9 = 10
2 + 8 = 10
3 + 7 = 10

etc...

If you know these then you can add bigger numbers more easily

E.g 17 + 43 = 60 because you know the 3 and 7 go together to make ten.

So you can work on memorising numbers bonds to ten and then twenty (which is easy really if you know those to ten ).

Sing the song, to the tune of Row your boat:
8 and 2 are number bonds,
9 and 1 are friends,
7 and 2, 6 and 4,
5 and 5 are twins.

Luckily There isn't one for up to 20, but it helps.

However to my brain, number bonds don't make it easier for me to learn those up to 100.

I hope it does for ds1 though.
