"The Children, Schools and Families Bill is set to complete its remaining stages
in the Lords.

The government has dropped several of the key measures from the bill owing to
opposition demands, including: guarantees of one to one tuition for children who
fall behind, mandatory sex education for those over 15 and a new registration
system for home-educated children.

Historically the government is forced to make concessions to opposition parties
during the so-called "wash-up" period to ensure that its legislation is passed
before Parliament breaks up for the general election.

The provisions that remain in the bill are concerned with special education
needs pupils, excluded pupils and allow greater access to the media in Family
Court proceedings."

It is fantastic news for HEors, but also for all parents, bronze. It would have been a disasterous thin end of the wedge for the state gradually taking more and more control of decisions about children away from the people who know best - their parents.

This is what I've said to my friends - this is wonderful news for us all. Be very, very glad this bill hasn't gone through, and make sure you vote so that it won't go through in the future.....because your children would have been next.

Don't believe me? Have under 5s? Compulsory nursery and preschool (because how else can their safety be ensured?) Planning on doing stuff with your kids over the summer holidays? Plan no longer; they'll be in a holiday playscheme (because parents can't be trusted over those 6 weeks with no one else checking up on them!). Home educators were an easy place to start, a minority group who most of the public think are a bit wacky anyway. But home educators ended up not being quite the easy end of the wedge they imagined .

I'm not just making this up, the problem with under 5s and summer holidays had already been strongly hinted at in this bill. All parents have had a very lucky escape, not just home educators.
