Has anyone ever been allowed to flexi school but actually only used the school to take exams ?

Hi

We are thinking of taking our son out of school (he is in year 9) Our others are HE'd and we would like the same freedom for the eldest but he wants to do his exams. I know we have several options there but I was thinking...I wonder if the school would let him go "flexi" but actually he would only go back to pick up work and do controlled assessments then sit his exams.

Has anyone else done anything like this ?

I look forward to your thoughts

I've never heard of that. It's an imaginative idea! Whether the head would cope with the prospect I don't know...

we have done something v similar from whenever it was she took her to GCSEs to now, upper VIth, although her attendance has soared to about 40% recently which is more than just showing up for exams

it depends on subjects, some things have to be done as a group don't they

took her GCSEs, not took her to GCSEs

I don't think the school would get anything out of it. They wouldn't get funding for it because the DC wouldn't be at school and yet the teacher would have to set and mark work.

Oh... I thought they still got funding for flexi schooling ? I have read so much over the last few weeks, I might be wrong.

It isn't flexi schooling if he isn't a body on a chair at least for a couple of hours a week. This is getting work from a teacher and the teacher marking it and then taking the exam-if I understand OP. They don't get paid for the extra work they are being asked to do. Flexi schooling is deciding which subjects and going in just for those subjects and attending the lessons.

There are some lessons he would like to do, I just thought it would be easier for the school if he was out more than he was in. I'm going to ask (if you don't ask you don't get!) the worst they can say is no.

Always worth asking.

Flexi schooling is likely to be much easier to get from Sept 2011, as long as this govt manages to get its changes through,
but at the moment it's at the discretion of the school. You can ask for it and it's my understanding that your kid would still be on the register for school (therefore, funded) but would be treated as having lots of authorised absences. But that's just me googling on the DFES site, so you might want to double check. I am looking to get it too, though for SEN reasons. Good luck!
