Language tutor and prices

Have been quoted £20 per hour for one child to learn french or she may be able to do £30 for 2 children.
Seems awfully expensive as would work out £80 or £120 per month and that sjust a lot for us as low income family.
Was wondering whether it seems expensive to others or is it as she said the going rate?

we often seem to have students at the local unis putting up ads for language tuition. Going rate more like £8 ph iirc but don't think they have any bits of paper. wouldn't bother us as really, I more want people talking and playing with kids in foreign language, but might if you were after, say gcse prep.

£20 ph seems pretty good for a specialist teacher though. That is what I pay my viola teacher, and he is a newish, young, teacher (very good though!)

another possibility-getting together with others for a group rate, or seeing if there is a local HEing parent who can do it for less?

Don't really have local HE'ers here but thought that she seemed to be a bit funny(she's a teacher at a local school apparently but not I believe comp)when I mentioned we HE and the price was orig £40 for two dc's but then she phoned back and changed it to £30 she had strong welsh accent(not against that as a m welsh myself)and I know that would mean it would be very hard for her to speak foriegn lang in correct accent.Maybe I'm just hoping that there may be cheaper out there as am struggling as also need new drum teacher for my dd.Might look around some more and see if I can find student who'd teach basics

There is a french man who lives in the next town from us who runs a really lovely, informal french club for children aged 4-7 for something like £4 per child - venue is free. The children have learned loads and really enjoy it. Maybe put some posters up saying a group of HEors are looking for someone who speaks french (or whatever) to do similar. I have a German friend who said she'd be really delighted to offer something similar, so there are people out there.

There are some language clubs out there, LCF has a site where you can check whether there is a club in your area.

We have used Club Espanol before, which was aimed at 5-10yo's and cost £3.75 per session.
Dd1 loved it but the woman only ran it for a year.

Check out Gumtree, see if there is someone there advertising their services.
Contact the local colleges, tutors will often give a recommendation for a student who they think would be suitable, fees will be low.

I think that it sounds like a reasonable rate to me. What about increasing the numbers to a group of 5, that should cut the cost a bit. The other option would be to try and find out if there is a local au-pair / student working in the area that wanted to do a language swap.

I've just bought the Galore park Spanish & it's quite good, we are all enjoying it.
I bought it a bit cheaper from Amazon.
