Home ed - with SN's - questions about de-registering etc....

DS is 10, he's in year 6 and has aspergers.

We've had a pretty difficult couple of years over his schooling, and its not looking like things are going to get better with his transfer to secondary next year.

Im seriously considering de-registering him and teaching him myself.

Im aware of the proceedure for de-registering a child in mainstream school, however Im not sure if DS is classed as being in MS?!

Briefly he left his MS school in May 08 and has been receiving (LEA supplied) home tution since. He is still on the role of his old MS, but I believe he is now dual registered with the school from which the home tution is provided which is a special school. His statement says that he is dual registered with a MS secondary school and a (completely unsuitable) special school - but both of these are secondary schools, so not applicable until Sept.

I guess what Im asking is can I stick my fingers up at the LEA and tell them where to stuff it, or do I have to ask for their gracious permission to home ed my son?

Thanks

I'm also interested in this subject, as I am in the first stages of considering HE my ds, who is 9yo, who is in a special school (for physically disabled).

We haven't managed to find a good/suitable secondary special school yet, and we have only two left to see... It's all very depressing that he doesn't seem to "fit" in anywhere. There's another year and a half before he will leave his primary school, but we need to plan where he is going.

Thats the trouble we are having, in that there is nowhere DS 'fits'. He's very very bright, but the schools that can meet his AS needs cannot meet his academic needs and vice versa. The only options locally are a MLD school in which the children never progress past primary level academically, and an EBD school - both of which are completely unsuitable. There is no where outside the LEA which could be travelled to on a daily basis, and I do not want my son to go a residential school. I feel like Im between a rock and a hard place.

I have asked elsewhere for an opinion on this sarah573, but would strongly suggest that you and twoisplenty both join the Home Education Special Needs email support list you will get a welcome there and great support and advice from people who know exactly where you are, as they have all 'been there'!

The home page says you are welcome to join, if you are thinking about home educating a child with SEN.
