Seneca/tassomai or other platforms for Home Education

Hello,

So looking for a little help with deciding how best to support my son.

He is currently in Year 7 and has had a series of serious safeguarding incidents at school, all of which he wasn’t the intended target but has unfortunately been a victim of. Due to safeguarding concerns we have deregistered him and found ourselves in the world of home education.

We are considering the option of attending another school, however other schools in the area are full in his year group.

I am currently teaching his maths, we are getting through Science with the help of bite size and some Collins books, Oak academy for English and then still doing some French and lots of running! 😅 Which is fine until the end of this academic year. But would like something more substantial from September.

I have looked at Wolsley, Kings and Queens for potential options from September, but have the consideration of finances. Although Kings/Queens I assume would be the nearest and smoothest transition if a place at mainstream came up and he wanted to go back to attending a school.

I then had a little look at Seneca and tassomai apps, but wonder how easily students access this way of learning when they are used to being in a classroom setting.

I also looked at MyEdSpace, which for the core subjects would be great for him as have the option of live/recorded lessons and also feedback on his work. But then I would still like him to be able to access a wider range of learning too!

To be honest I just feel a bit bamboozled by it all and would really appreciate some input from anyone who is home educating or works in the field!

Thank you!

I use Seneca as a recall homework but I’d be reluctant to rely on it as it’s quite basic facts rather than context. Home schooling isn’t cheap if done well.

Thank you, this was my assumption. Do you mind me asking, are you home schooling? How are you approaching it?

Seneca is ok we use it at school. It’s not specifically HE. Minerva looks amazing but probably expensive. I think home is a feasible alternative but I’ve been a teacher 20 years and never done home ed. But maybe I should set up a consultation service where I can help you find resources and plan for you child. I’m also a qualified SENCO. I recommend an English and maths tutor for now and over the summer. There are centre like Kip McGrath that are tutor centres away from home that woke help break up the day. Home ed time is more productive so while a 6 hour school day is typical it can be more like 4 and doesn’t have be 9-1 MON-Friday

Thank you. Minerva looks great but more expensive than the other online schools. I too, am a maths teacher of 20 years. So feel fine with what we are currently doing and he has progressed a lot since leaving school. I just want something more substantial from September and looking for him to the able to access more of the curriculum than just the core subjects.
