Latin Igcse/gcse how to sit the exam

Oceandaffodil · 15/02/2026 21:19

Has anyone done this. My dc has been studying at home and we now have a tutor but no idea how to actually sit the gcse itself. Hoping to sit the (one) exam summertime next year. TIA

Will school facilitate it? Worth an ask.
Otherwise, Google for external exam centres.

Muu9 · 16/02/2026 04:05

Tutorsandexams administers them for a fee

You would need to find an exam centre who accepts private candidates and does the board DD will be doing.

Tutors and Exams do some boards but not all for Latin so you will need to check.

Oceandaffodil · 16/02/2026 14:47

Dd hasn’t got a school she can go to unfortunately. Does anyone know how you go about finding an exam centre that accepts private candidate and quote which board we need to sit? Do I just ring up schools?

Apologies I’m totally ignorant of this stuff. She will sit her main gcse in 2029 but wants to do this gcse in year 9. The tutor teaches those already in a school so can’t help.

Which course are you doing? The exam board should be able to tell you which exam centres allow private candidates.

LIZS · 16/02/2026 15:01

But if tutor teaches Latin to gcse level in school/s they must know of somewhere to approach as a starting point.

I doubt a school teacher would know anything about private exam centres.

Oceandaffodil · 16/02/2026 15:23

Thanks @LIZS no they don’t seem to know? DDs previous tutor chose to take her through the OCR syllabus as that was what they were familiar with, although I’m thinking we might be able to change that to another one and maybe just do the exam later on instead.

Feel out of my depth tbh but dd wants to sit the exam.

You’ll be lucky to find a centre to accept her as a private candidate now as the entries close on Saturday and most schools are now on half term. They might accept a late entry but the fees are much higher.

Oceandaffodil · 16/02/2026 15:32

@sanityisamyth this would be for 2027 summer?
I’m trying to plan ahead as I haven’t a clue what to do. Or do I have to apply this early?

Speak to OCR and see what centres there are that do that exam.

Or call/email every private exam centre in travelling distance from you and ask if they do latin.

Pandorea · 16/02/2026 16:07

As pp advised - have a look at Tutors and Exams website and see if they have a centre near you. Then check if they offer this subject/board. They have quite a lot of centres.

ExistingonCoffee · 16/02/2026 16:36

T&Es do OCR GCSE Latin. For other centres, this page is a good place to start when looking for centres who accept private candidates - although not 100% and you would need to check what subjects/boards the centres offered,

Entries close now for summer 2026. Most private centres will close their registrations 6 months ahead.

WelcometomyUnderworld · 16/02/2026 17:36

Ive been looking at doing this as an adult. Almost all the private schools I emailed who sit the same syllabus were able to accommodate me for a sitting for a payment. I looked on the JCQ website and emailed the exam officers at the relevant schools.

itsstillgood2 · 22/02/2026 21:02

If you are planning on your child sitting exams as a private candidate you need the join the Home Education Exams and Alternatives group on Facebook as that is where you'll find lots of home educators with experience. This site is a Wiki home educators with experience of exams contribute to he-exams.fandom.com/wiki/Finding_an_exam_centre

gototogo · 22/02/2026 21:09

There are centres that specialise in home ed students but expect that it may be a distance. Alternatively approach local private schools who may be willing for a fee, smaller schools are more likely to be able to facilitate

https://www.jcq.org.uk/private-candidates/ - look at this
JCQ is the Joint Council of Qualifications and oversees all the exam boards running and practices in England. They should be able to tell you which exam centres would do Latin GCSE in your area and accept private candidates. I'd get onto it soon, because exam registrations may need to be 6 months before the exam.

Since the OP mentions IGCSEs in her thread title, just in case it is relevant to any other subjects her DD plans to sit, JCQ doesn’t oversee all boards. IGCSE CAIE is not part of the JCQ.
