Hi
My 14 yr old has adhd and is undergoing an asd assessment. He hates school and is unmotivated and his grades have dropped. He has been asking about homeschooling for a while.
Has anybody any experience of Minerva? Do they have a lot of pastoral care and mentoring? What is the timetable like and class size? How many gcse subjects can you take?
Also any feedback of other homeschooling platforms would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Also anyone out there have a child homeschooling with Wendover?
My thoughts are that there are quite a lot of lessons back to back, with only 30 mins for lunch which I’m not sure how my adhd /asd 14 yr old would cope with.

Any feedback much appreciated!

Hi there - we have been with Nisai for the last couple of years and have loved it. My DD suffers from high level anxiety and struggled with her mainstream school. She has really excelled in this new environment. The lessons are all live and only 15 kids in a class. The teachers, mentors and student support staff are fab! They all got to know my DD and us as parents so well and it’s so obvious how much the Nisai staff all care about her and her daily struggles. She really has come out of her shell and it’s so nice to have my daughter back in our lives again. She is achieving academic results we never thought she would reach.

I just found this thread via searching for the minerva virtual academy. My son is struggling massively at school, and I’ve just started wondering if this might be a suitable option for him. Very interested to read any ideas! I will also look up nisai. Thanks!

op-i hope my bump gets you some more responses 😊

The only person I've ever heard of who went to Minerva is a YouTuber called "Unjaded Jade" if you check her on YouTube there a loads of her videos and one of discussing her experience at Minerva.

My daughter goes to Minerva - it has been transformative for her. They were accredited by Ofsted recently - have a look at the report, it says it all really. Would thoroughly recommend it

To answer your questions @Soyacoffeegirl

  • The kids have an assigned mentor they speak to weekly. It’s a mix of pastoral and keeping on top of work. You then get a summary email once a fortnight
  • The classes vary in size. Some are larger than others. But a lot of the kids never ask a question (50% SEN) so if my DD puts her hand up she’s called upon immediately!
  • 9 GCSEs are part of the standard package. Lots of kids drop a couple. We just have- I always knew 9 would be too much so we decided to give all 9 a go and make a decision on which subjects were working less well
  • They have school trips etc and “social room” once a week. There is a whole school assembly Monday morning and a year group assembly once a week as well
  • There are local meetup groups which parents run
