I would like some advice I have a 15-year-old son who is partially sighted and autistic he has struggled in secondary school since day one the school has not been accommodating at all with eyesight problems and being autistic I have been in the school many times and the school has said they will put things in place which have not. My son has sensory issues and would like to wear headphones he has been refused when he has gone into classes teachers have said ho didn't know you were here today have not done your work big you will have to do it, lots of other comments and this has made my child depressed and he has not been to school. Last week I found out he was planning to kill himself over school we are now with CAMHS to help him but I feel if the problem is school maybe i should just deregister him but he only has one year left and there are exams my head is in a bit of a spin as in one way i fill this is the answer but in the other would the education department have other options as they have offered nothing.

Your poor ds, the school sounds rubbish with SEN. Loads of children are allowed headphones, loop earbuds, ear defenders at dd's school.

Can recommend the Fb group "Not fine in school", for advice and info, so much knowledge and help on there x

As @Ivyy said also look at SENDIAS

Since he’s on the brink of suicide I absolutely would deregistered him immediately. Mental health trumps everything. It’s quite likely this would mean a delay in doing GCSEs, but he can definitely access education later - if not via home ed (you can do IGCSEs independently but there’s a cost and it takes some time and effort to arrange) then at college after 16 or through adult education. First things first: get him out of there and get him on the road to recovery.

Personally, I wouldn’t deregister. That doesn’t mean DS has to attend school when he clearly isn’t able to, though. Parents often find it easier to get support when DC remain in the system. Crudely, you are someone’s ‘problem’ and the LA retains responsibility. Whereas, if you deregister the LA will say you are making suitable alternative arrangements, thereby relieving them of their duty to provide alternative suitable education (which doesn’t have to be traditional academic education if that isn’t suitable. For example, it can be therapeutic education and support for DS’s additional needs and mental health).

Does DS have an EHCP?

Once you have the headspace, complain about the disability discrimination at school.

once you deregister you pay for all exams . Mine had specialist ed team 12 hours a week . it meant she got support , more was done at home tho.
we have now got a good place for the rest of her gcses .
good luck
