Home Ed - has anyone done it because they've got a very lively son?

My son is 2.9 and bright. OK ... still quite young, but he's very energetic/hyper and I'm not sure if he would settle at school. (he's a May birthday and all the school round here take them in September so he'd only just be 4). He is quite immature despite being v bright and I've had to pull him out from pre-school as he has been charging round like a loony and has pushed kids. He also still needs a nap (sometimes 2 hours) which I can't see him dropping any time soon.

I've been considering home schooling for the first couple of years of school as it would give him time to mature but my Mum is really worried he won't fit it if he starts school late.

Thanks MMJ. I guess he will change loads!! Just he seems a lot more immature than other kids his age at the moment. Maybe we just know lots of non-energetic kids !!

They do change an awful lot!...but saying that my DS has always been a bit of a live wire & shows no sign of slowing down so far (he will be 4 in July). We had already decided to HE for loads of other reasons anyway so it wouldn't have made much difference to our decision.

TBH as you want him to have a school-based education then applying for a place as normal would be advisable & then if you feel he isn't mature enough for it or he shows signs that it's affecting him, then ask to defer until later that year...or de-reg & HE until later on...although if your preferred school is over subscribed then you might find he won't have a place anymore...but I personally feel that a child would probably do better at a medeocre school than a good one if it meant they were better able to cope with the school environment....fitting in later schouldn't be a problem if the school has good policies for that type of thing - many children do just fine if their family has to move schools/areas.

Oh yes!
Lots of the children at our local groups are just like your son-and some of them are quite a bit older!
Unlike school, these children are not made to sit down and be quiet etc.
They can work a bit, then run round and then do a bit more-as they choose, at their own pace.
Parents of children like these who have deregistered them from school, tell me the child gets so much more done this way then they ever did before.

It is true he may change loads but why not keep your options open?
Keep an open mind and find out about schools locally but......

How about going and finding other home educators locally and chat, as well?
(There is a thread here about finding other home educators-I will bump it up now.)

Have a look at Muddle Puddle the webpage for families home educating young children and join the Early years HE support list and talk to other families there.
I know you will get lots of support.

Then armed with all of the info, you can make an informed decision about what is right for your family, when the time comes.
