My DD (Y8) is struggling with school atm. There were some signs of classroom anxiety in primary, but her school were lovely and worked with her to address it. However, transition to secondary has been a challenge and her anxiety is now at a level where she is asking not to have to go to school, is v distressed about moving around school / being in busy spaces.

she has always been a very different child at home to how she is in school, and it seems to be getting more pronounced. She says she feels safe at home and is asking to be home schooled.

Whilst I can see that there has probably been a long build up to the school avoidance that is happening now, it’s probably come out of no where as far as school are concerned. Her school have responded compassionately, with some immediate small adjustments (I.e early exit from class so she can move to the next class before the corridors are busy, offering short days) and I am due to meet the head of year today to discuss.

However, I want my DD to thrive in her education, rather than merely surviving. I have started looking at alternatives options. I work full time, but in a role that is 100% wfh (work for a global IT company where such contracts are common and likely to persist). I am unlikely to be able to stop work and dedicate myself to home Ed 100%, but I am in a good place to be able to support her in an online school.

All of which is a long preamble to asking, have you any recent experience of online school that you can share? I have been looking particularly at Minerva’s Virtual Academy and Kings InterHigh. Also looked at Wolsey Hall Oxford and the pre 16 options at our local 6th form college. I am keen to get feedback from people with DC in these settings, but also other online providers.

I want to give her the best shot of being able to engage fully in her current school, but am keen to understand what the alternatives are. And I guess to be assured that there are alternatives and the sky won’t fall in if she doesn’t stay in mainstream school.

I’m in the same situation with my DD (14). Starting ‘The Online School’ in September, does anyone have experience of that school? @Octavia64 is that the school you refer to?

Thanks all for the feedback on the online schools. It so helpful as is quite difficult get a true feel of it from online advertising and as there is no physical building to attend. Much appreciated.

I realise this is into the new term but how are people finding Minerva?

I'm curious about the mentoring too - what's it like?

Motherhood97 · 25/09/2024 13:02

Me too! How’s it all going?

My son is in year 10 and we will be moving after half term in Jan '25. Most of the preferred grammar or state schools have kept us in waiting list. I am also exploring online schools. Minerva, highgrove, Sophia, Cambridge etc. I could see mostly good reviews on Minerva here in group. Can someone please give feedback on other online schools too. Many thanks

We had three children at Wendover Online school and are very happy with the results. wendoveronlineschool.com

Following up on my previous reply, the elements that stood out over and above the other schools were small class sizes, live classes and connections with businesses for work experience / internships.

Anyone anymore news about Minerva? Particularly interested what the mentoring looks like in practice as thats their big thing isn't it?

My eldest attends the online school after trialing a few others, the reason we picked that one is because she suffered extreme anxiety from severe physical bullying in mainstream school. The online school is particularly good for anxious children, they do not have to have cameras or mics on and always have a happiness manager in every lesson, who they can chat to. They will not tolerate any bullying, I know all schools say that, but if you bully you get 1 chance where your public chat is frozen and you can only chat to the teacher and I assume happiness manager and if it continues when it's unfrozen then your out. I haven't seen any bullying though. I also like that years 10+11 do 11-5, I find my daughter like most teenagers needs more sleep and performs much better, we do fit an extra lesson on a Tuesday morning with The £2 tuition hub so it's good to have that flexibility. They do meetups every term where they are very good at encouraging friendships and they also have a buddy system where with parents permission wattsapp can be exchanged. They also have 100% pass rate which non of the other schools have, although I must say the pass rates for all the online schools I looked at were far higher than the averages for mainstream schools (our local being 40% ☹️)
