Dc 10 has been begging me to leave their current school for 2 years. I've finally got to the point where I do actually think dc is better off at least taking a break from ms education. But now I've finally made that decision and dc is very (very) happy they won't be going back in January, I am now so nervous though.

My plan is to spend next term from January focussed on all things dc likes as they have become so stressed out by school I just want them to unwind a bit and then by the equivalent of school summer term, I hope to sign them up for an online school. I never for one moment thought we'd be leaving the school system but I am grateful we have this option.

Hi. Not in this position, because we are home edding from the beginning, but I wanted to say, good luck! Have faith in yourself and your son. You are taking the right approach, beginning with gently “unschooling” and then allowing your son to show you what he can deal with.

Look on Facebook for local homeschooling groups, and I bet by this time next year, you and he will be so glad you took this step. Best wishes.

Thanks @EveryKneeShallBow I will take a look on facebook as well. I wish I'd homeschooled from the beginning!

Hi OP. We took our daughter (15yrs) out of school last year, due to her mental health, and it has definitely been the right decision for her.

Whilst we still have work to do on her anxiety in social settings, she is so much happier now, and our families comment on how she is almost back to the child we all know.

She is currently in her GCSE years, but will probably only sit a couple in May/June (can’t recall the dates yet), and a few more the following school year, so as to take the pressure off of her.

I was so nervous at the start of it all, and wondered if we were doing the right thing, but you know what is best for your child. I joined several home ed groups, which have been invaluable to us. There is no rush to get started with it all. Take your time and find out what works well for you both.

Here’s to your exciting new adventure!

Thanks @HeartandSeoul I do feel we are doing the right thing and my dc has bad anxiety now caused by school so I'm hoping they can go back to the dc they once were too, it's good to hear from others who have found the experience to be a positive one!

Hi , I am educating my son at home also. Do any of you find it hard to find local home ed groups?

we are in North Staffordshire and are desperately trying to set one up, any advice?

Have you looked on Facebook? That is where most home ed groups are. There is one called "Home Education Staffordshire" with over 2000 members, so I expect there will be something happening near you.
