Home school for a year- and return to school

Hi
I'm looking at spending a year abroad for work. Only one of us would be working and DD will be 3 and 7 when we go. So not yet Reception, and Year 3.
I'd like DD7 to return to school after a year. Has anyone done that with their school? Will they take her back?

They won't keep her space for her for a year no. She will off rolled and then when you move back you will have to apply for an in year place. Depends how popular the school is on whether she will get a place as their may be waiting lists etc....

Thanks @OhhhhhhhhBiscuits We'll be back in our own house so would she just go back on the list for local catchment schools?

And do you know how long does she have to be off to be off rolled ?
She loves her school so I do want her to go back.. probably! Depending on how well home schooling goes!

You would have to deregister her from the school. . As above she wouldn’t automatically get back into the same school as her place can be given to the next on the list(depends on how sought after the school is really) or if someone moves to the area and needs a place so when you came back she would be placed in any local school that had a spot for her.

Is her class/school full?

I think it's a few weeks absence before you are taken off the school roll, presumably you will tell the school you are going abroad.

No guarantee of a place. If the school is full and your application is refused, they would need to go on a waiting list or you could appeal for year 3 as Infant Class Size would not apply. When would you need to apply for Reception as if your dc2 is not resident at your UK address not all LA will accept it until you return.

Is her school full? I have a friend who took her daughter back to her home country for 5 months so deregistered and just enrolled again when back but our school is undersubscribed so it wasn't an issue. If it's full she'd have to go on the waiting list.

As others have said, home ed for a year while abroad is not a problem, assuming the country where you'll be living allows it; however, the school is not allowed to keep the place waiting for your daughter and when you return you'll be in the same position as anyone else moving to the area.

BTW it is not "off-rolling"; that refers to the illicit practice of schools persuading unwilling parents to remove their children from school because the school doesn't want to have to deal with them, usually in the case of special needs.

In this case, the school would remove the child's name from the register as soon as the child has moved away.

Thanks all. The school is a good one (although brand new headmaster keeps saying it would fail an OFSTED inspection should they have one now) so it is popular choice. There's a bigger (and officially better) school nearer to us but she likes this one. Lots to consider.
