Edexcel English Spec A or B

Morning all. We're in the process of choosing GCSEs and deciding between the above. I get the technical differences between the specifications and understand the requirements, but wanted to canvass any opinions from people already doing/done the exams.

Both kids are pretty good with comprehension and are confident creative writers. They've both done a separate study course in transactional writing alongside KS3 English, but I wouldn't say they're super-strong on that, but averagely capable I guess - we might revisit that course.

Thanks!

Unless it has changed in the last few years, here's my advice.

Do they want to do a lot of preparation and be familiar with the texts beforehand? Choose Spec A.

If they are good at thinking on their feet and want to do the minimum work beforehand, choose Spec B.

That's my take on it anyway. My teen went for Spec B because firstly, they didn't want to have to read some of the more depressing texts and secondly, they were rather lazy and felt confident of their ability to "wing it" when presented with texts they hadn't seen before. It was the right choice for them. Other friends have preferred Spec A because they like to feel well prepared and know what's coming.

Brill, thanks. I'm on that group and comb through the comments most days Grin I just thought I'd try here check out further views as my two are a bit stuck with their decision.

Did you do Eng Lit as well?

No, my kid wanted to do the minimum possible work 😂 to get English and maths in case it was ever needed for uni or a job. They just did those two GCSEs! They're now at uni doing an arts subject, which they got onto based on portfolio, recommendations, and relevant work experience.
