Hi,

My daughter is only 3 but I am planning to home school her.

I'm currently on universal credit as I'm a single parent with no family help.

Are you still able to claim when home educating?

I want to stress this is not a long term plan, I eventually want to start my own business so can work from home.
But it's just while i find my feet

My mum home schooled my brother and she recently passed away unexpected, she's who I usually went to with any home Ed questions

I'm so sorry to hear you've lost your mum😓What a shock for you.

Your daughter's education is not at all relevant to claiming Universal Credit. You will still be expected to look for work when she reaches the standard ages, whether she is in school or not.

If you can't find a job which is compatible with looking after her yourself, you'd be expected to use paid childcare such as a childminder to cover your working hours. However, UC cannot tell you that you should put her into school and use school as childcare. This is because the official government line is that school is purely for education and is not childcare. We all know that in practice school does form part of many working families' childcare arrangements, but that's the party line.

As you probably know, you can educate your daughter during any hours you want, and it typically takes far less time than school would, due to the advantages of individual attention. So you don't have to sit her down doing formal work from 9-3 M-F. This means you shouldn't have any trouble fitting in home education around your work commitments.

Yes you can however you'd still be expected to do work commitments and find a job.

You will still be required to find work in line with the requirements on the link, no matter if you home school or not. You cannot avoid the work commitments kicking in by keeping your child home from school.

You can still claim UC while working though, as a sole trader or as an employee.
