Cool + dark window coverings

We have big bay windows, UPVC double glazed, in our bedroom and two sets or curtains: dark red velvet for winter and unlined white cotton for summer.

Unfortunately this month I'm faced with the unfortunate trio of warm weather, the advent of menopausal hot flushes, and a brand new super bright LED street light next to our house level with the top of the window. I'm capable of sleeping with lights on, but I've read a lot of stuff saying that it's not good for your health, and I do find a darker room less stressful. But I need something cool. (DH also hates the heat and light so we're both on the same page).

Because of the angles, covering the top half of one side of the bay would make a big difference but I'm not sure how to do it - I often use the room to WFH in as well so any solution has to be removable.

Any good ideas?

Fear not! I have the solution.

Order a length of blackout AND thermal curtain lining (a single fabric which does both). Cut to size. Aim for just a little bigger than you think as you can always cut it back afterwards. No need to hem as it doesn't fray. I bought ours from eBay.

Then order some velcro. Glue a small tab of velcro at each corner as the window goes round. Glue a corresponding tab of velcro at the appropriate places on the curtain liner.

Stick up when required, take down when not.

Ta da!

I think you're right Perspicacious! Gluing the Velcro to UPVC will be non-trivial but should be possible I think - I'd only need a tiny circle on each corner.

Thank you so much.
