do home ed children have to do gcses?

My eldest went to college at 14 and did 3 gcse's and an As level the first year (although he stopped doing the As level as he realised computing was deadly boring. He did 4 As levels and 2 more GCSEs the next year and 3 A levels and 1 more GCSE the year after. Then on to University at 17, and after his degree started his Phd doing biomedical research at 20.
