What do you find the best thing about home schooling? I think it’s being able to follow your children’s interests

For example my ds has learnt so much since he’s been at home, and it’s great to be able to do work related to things he’s interested in, he’s only 6 though.

That’s awesome! I think that some children will really benefit from having daily one on one support. Children who were less focused at school may have more productive periods because the spotlight is on them now! I’m a teacher and I’ve seen many of my FS2 children writing beautifully at home whereas at school they might have been more distracted or avoided writing activities.

@Lardlizard I love the positivity of your question :)

This is a lovely post but homeschooling hasn't been great with my DS 7. He resists and complains and sulks! It's exhausting. DD 9 gets on with it but doesn't enjoy it. Oh well. I do my best!

Biggest pros:
-being able to follow the children's interests is definitely a plus. We learnt all about the ancient Greeks last week as DD1 loves Greek myths. We've been learning about spiders as DD2 loves them.

-I've also found it beneficial that the child-adult ratio is just 2:1 so I can easily spot the areas that either of my DDs are struggling with and spend extra time on those and then cover areas that they find easy in greater depth.

Cons:

  • it's bloody hard work planning learning opportunities and getting fun, interactive learning resources while working out of the house in an intense job.

-I find it hard to get the balance right when giving positive feedback that DD can learn from. Sometimes I just want to be 'Mummy' and coo over her work without looking at how we could have remembered to use punctuation etc.
