Can I get extra help for DS with ADHD

Hi there,

DS is in year 10 and we are looking into him being homeschooled. He has an ADHD diagnosis and is on Ritalin. Does anyone know if I can get any extra help with the LA for him? I dont get any extra financial help because he isnt too bad, but I wondered if his diagnosis can be used in anyway to get extra HS support?

Thank you in advance

In principle, home educated children with SEN can receive help from the LA, but in practice it is very difficult to obtain. Does your son have an EHCP? If, as you say, he is "not too bad" then you might have quite a fight on your hands. The people I have heard of who have received financial support to home educate a child with SEN have had quite significant additional needs.

You might find, however, that the flexibility of home education lets you play to his strengths and therefore that he needs less extra support when out of school than he did when in school.

By the way, another possible option is college. Many colleges have programmes for 14-16 year olds. Most but not all are vocational. Some are full-time, similar to school, but the content or the approach of the college might suit your son better than the school environment did. In other cases, home educated kids can do some subjects at college and others at home, allowing them to pick and choose the subjects which are relevant to them. For instance, he might do a catering course one day a week at college while doing academic subjects at home with you.

Thank you Saracen I appreciate your reply and all that info. That is really interesting about the college programmes for 14-16 year olds I will look into that too.
