Educational visits for igcse history

Hi
DD is doing IGCSEs with Cambridge Online School.

I want to organise some visits to support various subjects but I'm struggling with ideas for history.

The curriculum options they are taking cover;

International relations since 1919
(League of Nations, cold war, communism, Gulf war)
Germany 1918 to 1945
Russia 1905 to 1941

Other than the Imperial War Museum I can't think of relevant places to visit. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Parliament

Look for exhibitions. I think the National Archives at Kew have a Cold War one opening soon. There is a Russia one at the Science Museum but that might be closing soon from memory.

How about Bletchley Park? Parliament would be good too.

DS is doing GCSE history, his trips are great but very extravagant, there are 5! He's doing imperial war museum, Poland, France, Belgium and Germany! 😩 I'm not sure how most are affording it to be honest, DS can only go as exp had lots of money and pays for things like that rather than maintenance 🙄

Where are you based?

DameCelia · 23/03/2019 18:39

Fantastic suggestions, thank you!
OKBobble we are in East Anglia but able to get to most places, we'd combine visits for subjects if possible in order to do a few days anywhere further than the Midlands.

Kelvedon 'secret' nuclear bunker in Brentwood. There is also one in Cheshire. They are fascinating. There are also tank museums and aircraft museums that are all stuffed with military left overs in various places. DS2 is doing iGCSE at CHS internet school. Is this the same 'school'?

Could you go wild and do a few days break to Berlin?!

windysowindy · 23/03/2019 19:25

Oh I think I found a place once when I got lost
Let me think 😬😬😬
Yes this!

They were so friendly and I saw one giving a tour to students. Oh OP I really liked the place and nobody was there and they were so lovely.

Churchill War Rooms in London.

The Greenham Cold War Experience near Newbury looks interesting. They do two-hour workshops. I can't find any reviews from anyone who's been to the workshops, however - TripAdvisor only has reviews from people who have wandered round the site and eaten in the cafe!

The American Cemetery near Cambridge is very interesting:

Amazing ideas, thanks!
Would love to go to Berlin but £££ don't allow I'm afraid.
Keep that would be the one!

Churchill War Rooms are fascinating. DS is a real buff, he’s taking his iGCSE this year too, so I took him for that really, expecting to find it extremely dull myself, but it was excellent and we spent 5 hours there, much longer than I expected. Get there early though, it does get busy. Haven’t been to Bletchley Park yet but it’s next on the list. National Archive is superb but you can’t just turn up, you need to arrange a readers ticket and order the documents you want to view in advance.
Have you thought about a battlefields tour?

OKBobble · 24/03/2019 21:02

Duxford War Museum near Cambridge too now I know you are in East Anglia. (Me too!)

Sorry to change the subject but I am very interested in Cambridge Online for my 14 year old son. Could you let me know how you're getting on please?
