Duolingo is a good app!

Knittink · 02/01/2019 19:38

Duolingo is a good way to start, but it doesn't give any grammatical explanations at all, so you might want to get a basic Spanish grammar book too, or have a look at spanishdict.com, which has explanations and exercises.

In terms of apps I recommend Duolingo and Learn Spanish - Español by Wlingua because they both cover grammar rules rather than just having you learn phrases by rote. When I first started Duolingo didn't cover grammar so I bought Collins Easy Learning Complete Spanish which I highly recommend. I'd also suggest looking into the Paul Noble method, he does audiobooks but not sure about anything else. ¡Buena suerte! (Good luck)Smile

Michel Thomas! He'll teach you all the grammar!

The bcc had archived a good Spanish introductory course.
The most helpful way to learn is with a native speaker, if you know any or are in a uni town etc where you could find one.
One of our temporary cleaners at work was Spanish and over time she was a great family teacher and become a firm friend.

How old is your son?

I have used rosetta stone in the past which is good but not great for beginners basics :( but we have used these learning mats for our kids when we were starting off, you might find them useful: www.educationallearningmats.co.uk/spanish_mats/spanish_ks3
there is space for practicing on the back and a phonics section at the bottom which was really useful, especially considering I have no clue how to pronounce them :')

"say something in Welsh" also do a course in Spanish (and a couple of other languages) using the same learning system.

Agree about Michel Thomas.
Dh is Spanish and I learned Spanish using the MT cds
