Accelerated Reader type scheme for HE

I'm looking for something like the Accelerated Reader programme for my 13 y o DS. Is it available to buy as a single licence for home use? Or is there alternative we can use?

Thanks

What do you want to get out of a reading scheme? (Genuine question as they vary greatly!)

I think I used the word 'scheme' in error - it's more of a programme/platform (semantics!) I've seen AR used well in secondary schools to motivate reluctant readers - it provides online comprehension quizzes for thousands of real books, tracks reading and makes recommendations based on books read and awards points. I 'm looking for something similar for my 13 yo HE son. I think the points would appeal to him and he could 'independently' discover new titles (anything I recommend is met with a teenage sneer...) He does not read for pleasure, although he has rediscovered audiobooks and we have got some cracking titles from the library which he is happy to listen to, so I feel all is not lost. I would be grateful for any advice from parents who have cracked this.

With my 3 we had an agreed reading list - it worked out about 1 book per 5 weeks. The books were chosen together to give them a variety of books that I thought they would like. If they really hated a book, they could discuss it with me and we would change it. At the end they had to write a book review.

Anything else they read was purely for pleasure and they could read whatever they liked.

So could you have a negotiated list? With a 'prize' for each one or points towards a prize?

AR has destroyed my Sons love of reading which is very sad. Hates the book selection he just wants to read what he wants not only within a certain range. Plus (I’m aware this wouldn’t be applicable for HE) the playground competiveness over levels is just ridiculous

I also think AR is a bit gash. It's awfully restrictive and the questions are so random. If it's about points and recommendations then I think you would be better off with completed and discussed books earning an agreed reward (every 5/10?), and getting him into a bookshop/library and browsing their teen section for recommended titles - you can step back and let him do the choosing.

I wonder if he'd get more out of something like a site like Goodreads? He could review books he's liked on there (or just rate them out of 5) and it suggests new titles he might like with reviews etc.
