Can you homeschool in the summer term of Y6?

Hi, I would like to homeschool my daughter from May for the rest of summer term and de register her from her current school in England. I wanted to send her for a month to a (relaxed private) school abroad (she’d be staying with relatives). She has been accepted to an independent school, Y7, from September and would be returning for that. Would we have any problems with the secondary school? Do private schools mind if a child is homeschooled for part of summer term before going there in September? Thanks so much! Dd not happy in Y6 due to staff changes.

I have no experience of private schools, but if you deregister in Y6 from a state school your place at secondary will not be compromised, I really can’t think why independent would be any different.

I wouldn't have thought anyone need know at secondary what you're doing now.

I can't imagine the school would know or care!

Thanks so much for your replies. I was concerned if they require any reports or sat results? Although she’s passed 11+.

Most secondary state schools pay little attention to SATs, in my experience anyway, as you say she has passed the 11+ and that is probably all the school will be interested in.

Thank you all for your help!

They are unlikely to care - if you've accepted the offer of a place then it's not going to make a difference. It's your decision, not theirs. Kids will be starting secondary having forgotten much of what they did in summer term anyway!

The end of primary can be a lovely time to go on adventures - the only downside would be missing that rite of passage of all the leavers' celebrations.

One of mine started school for the first time in Year 7 and I think only his form tutor really even noticed he'd never been to school before!
