Home ed before 7+ prep

Hi! I’ve never used this board before so excuse any ignorance!
My dd is currently at reception at a good preprep and loves it there. She will move into year 1 in September.

My husband wants to move location for work ASAP and this means pulling dd out of her lovely school and finding a new one.
We recently visited a few but they are so full we are looking at waiting lists and potentially having to find a stop gap until year 3 standard entry for most of these schools.

I really don’t want dd to end up going to a second school for year 1&2 and then transferring to a third school for year 3 as I feel this is quite disruptive for her emotional well being and education. I may be wrong about that but I am worried that she’s made so many friends at this school that she might be disheartened if two years later she’s simply learning we will pull her out of school each time she is settled.

I am seriously considering home schooling until she is offered a place in year 3.
I have no idea what home schooling consists of. Can anyone help me? Is this a daft idea or should I just keep her in any school if I plan to from year 3 anyway? Do you have to have tutors at this age?
Thanks!

You definitely don’t need tutors at this age! You just need to do an hour or two of one to one learning per day - English, Maths and whatever else you fancy really! You’ll probably find lots going on for home educators locally, so you can join groups/trips/extra curricular activities to fill your days.

We did something similar for years 5 and 6, during which time we also prepared for the 11 plus. I’m not sure how much work is required for 7 plus but for us the real bonus was that we condensed all the 11 plus prep into about 3 months by doing it during the day. Round us, most kids who are taking 11 plus do an hour or two of tutoring after school for around a year, plus extra work at home in addition to the school day. Our approach felt a bit less stressful and it didn’t drag on so long!

I think it’s a great idea.
