Hi,

My dd isn't home Ed but i wasn't sure where to post

She's 2.5 and has started to show an interest in fractions she loves numbers and dh and I want to obviously encourage this and teach her at home as nursery won't cover fractions.

So what I was hoping was for some tools and ideas from you lovely people to help nurture this interest in fractions with my dd

we do tonnes of play based activities and hands on learning at home about all sorts of things so I'm not afraid to try some new ideas or invest in some educational tools if any one has any ideas to help with teaching her early fractions?

Cake or pizza. Absolute necessities for teaching fractions in this house.

Mine like these. The 3 year old plays with them by lining them up and the 9 year old uses them to order fractions and to solve 'adding and subtracting fraction' problems.

I agree that things like kit kats, pizzas etc help!

Brilliant thank you both for your responses.

I like the look of the tower cubes and shall order her some we've got a fair few learning resources toys so thy should be good.

Will also have pizza and cakes over the weekend :)

When I was teaching PRU kids, who had no idea what a fraction was let alone a decimal or percentage, I used fruit. So bought ten nectarines, 4 apples, 8 plums, 3 bananas etc. I started off with the basics using coins, the week earlier, and we did some games around amounts of the fruit they had to get. So half the apples, a third of the bananas, etc and we then converted each into the percentages and decimals...they loved working out how many of the fruit they should have got. If they couldn't work it out, we drew a circle and coloured in the fraction they needed to make it easier to count.

At home, I would start using the terms around the house, so put half your socks on the right foot, and half your socks on the left...put ketchup on a third of your fish fingers, then the next third making it two thirds, then the last third making it a whole...that sort of thing.
