Hi all,I'm looking for some advice as thinking of home schooling my 4 year old can anyone advise me firstly on your own reasons for home schooling at what you wrote to the school/education department when choosing to home school and where do you get your resources from, any tips

eyebrowsonfleek · 03/07/2016 18:50

My tip is to try the Home Schooling topic.

Bgmt2014 · 03/07/2016 18:53

Can u tell me where???

OP posts:
MistyMeena · 03/07/2016 19:00

Try typing 'home ed' into the search function

saltlakecity · 03/07/2016 19:04

I'm really sorry if this sounds harsh. Do you think you have the literacy skills to homeschool? Your post suggests punctuation and grammar could be an issue. However, I am aware that what people post on a forum isn't always reflective of their usual way of writing.

CrazyDuchess · 03/07/2016 19:10

Wow - a bit harsh Saltlake??

OP was asking for a advice about reasons for homeschooling... not a critique on her grammar skills

Cagliostro · 03/07/2016 19:12

There's a home ed topic under the education section but it's very quiet.

Happy to PM if you fancy it, I've been home educating my two (9 and nearly 7) for over a year.

:)

saltlakecity · 03/07/2016 19:14

I did apologise Crazy. I don't intend to hurt her but I do think it's important to be realistic. A child doesn't get a second chance at early education. I've seen what appalling home schooling can do (although I know it is done fantastically well by many parents).

CrazyDuchess · 03/07/2016 19:15

Yes... I know what you mean... but I think give OP the opportunity to see what it's all about, not discouragement at the get go....

Bgmt2014 · 03/07/2016 19:21

Saltakecity do you always use the correct grammar when using forums or texting? Or are you perfect, reminds me of exactly why I don't post because of unhelpful bullies like u

OP posts:
EssexMummy1234 · 03/07/2016 19:23

OP - in my area every single child who is due to start school and who does not attend an LEA school triggers a flag with children's services who then interview / question the parents. I don't think you can just write them a letter, I think you need to have a pretty comprehensive plan.

lulucappuccino · 03/07/2016 19:25

I agree with Salt, I'm afraid. Appalling writing, OP.

Bgmt2014 · 03/07/2016 19:26

Sorry didn't realise if cause people to criticise was looking for advice but this obviously is not the place as it seems you have to watch what u write here treading on egg shells comes to mind

OP posts:
saltlakecity · 03/07/2016 19:27

Bgmt2014,
I am not an unhelpful bully. Yes I sometimes make punctuation and grammatical errors online.
Feel hurt and feel like I'm bullying you if you like (it certainly wasn't my intention) but please do honestly ask yourself whether you can teach your child the literacy skills necessary. I don't know whether you can or not but you post did suggest a multitude of grammar and punctuation errors.

CrazyDuchess · 03/07/2016 19:28

BGMT2014 please ignore the other posters and speak to Caglio for some advice. Xx

saltlakecity · 03/07/2016 19:29

As do your later posts I'm afraid.

Bgmt2014 · 03/07/2016 19:29

So you've been helpful in your opinion have u salt?you know what forget it I shall go elsewhere for advice

OP posts:
AndNowItsSeven · 03/07/2016 19:29

Essex that's appalling that's not the case where I live.

lulucappuccino · 03/07/2016 19:31

Don't tread on egg shells, just be clear in your posts. Your writing is really terrible. Presumably someone else will be teaching your dd literacy though, so it doesn't matter.

saltlakecity · 03/07/2016 19:32

I do feel like I've been helpful if it makes you consider what I've said. The early English skills of your child are crucial. I'm sorry if you don't want to hear what I've said. I'm sorry if you feel like I've been too hard.

Bgmt2014 · 03/07/2016 19:34

Lulu I wasn't aware I was on literacy watch when posting a thread I do apologise,I thought that this was called mums net wasn't aware nasty children where in here!!!

OP posts:
Bgmt2014 · 03/07/2016 19:35

So u don't use text talk in here salt? Or us abbreviations? Far from perfect yourself

OP posts:
lulucappuccino · 03/07/2016 19:37

OP, you post about home schooling, using possibly the worst grammar I've ever seen on Mumsnet, but get all defensive when it's pointed out to you.

Get a grip and book your DD an English tutor.

Cagliostro · 03/07/2016 19:37

Re: registering etc. I don't have experience of HEing from the start, but some of our friends who have did not register at all. Others did. Anyway, for us, registering as HE was no big deal at all - they just sent somebody round from the LEA (called an 'associate teacher') to have a chat really.

The first time she asked specific questions about what kind of approach to learning we take, she looked through various workbooks and the stories the DCs were reading, looked at their paintings/poems and that kind of thing. They also wanted to find out what opportunities they had to socialise (which as I described above was really not an issue - luckily we found the group pretty quickly and they'd already joined a few clubs by then).

On the second visit (it's an annual thing) she didn't really ask anything as my DD talked her ear off for an hour and a half :o and they showed her everything they've been doing. Some people don't want the intervention but to us it was just an informal chat and a chance for the DCs to show off what they've been doing. And for the LEA to check we aren't just sticking them in front of the telly all day or keeping them isolated. Really no big deal. :)

lulucappuccino · 03/07/2016 19:39

Your spelling and punctuation are atrocious. I hope you won't be teaching this to your DD.

saltlakecity · 03/07/2016 19:39

I've already said I don't always use perfect literacy techniques online Bgmt. It's not even about the text speak. It's about the lack of full stops and the grammatical errors, which you may pass onto your child if you write like this in 'real life'.
