Fiction for five year old dd

Hi, I wasn't sure which subject to post this under but I think HE is a good possibility.

DD has just started having what I call proper paperback books read to her. Unfortunately these have been the fairy books by Daisy Meadows which frankly I find rather sickly although DD loves them. I've been looking in the shops recently for something which both she and I would like but have found it difficult. She loves fairies and princesses and I wonder if the Gwyneth Rees books might be alright as after a quick perusal in the shop they seemed to have better language.

I really didn't like the look of lots of the stuff which seemed to be about naughty kids and very slangy - I mean why encourage that? Also, lots of the books seemed to be about school and I didn't want dd to get romantic ideas about school. When I was a child I used to want to go to boarding school when I used to read MAlory Towers and St Clares!

So, in a nutshell, any recommendations for fiction for a five year old - (for me to read to her, not for her to read.) I'd love something well written, about real life and with warmth. Is that possible? Thanks

'sprinter' books (I think) are great short chapters and quite straight forward

we like 'the finger eater' by dick king-smith

The magic kitten stories seem to be quite fun, and there is a series called animal ark; also have you thought of Secret seven etc

Second Teddy Robinson. Also Pippi Longstocking (not about real life, but still). She does become a cannibal princess...

DD (4y7m) enjoys: My Naughty Little Sisiter, Naughty Amelia Jane, The Magic Faraway Tree stories, Flat Stabley, James and the Giant Peach, Milly Molly Mandy. She likes a lot of Enid Blyton's short stories as well.

Dd is currently entranced by Roald Dahl's Danny the Champion of the World. It's certainly a much better written book than some of the others we've read to her and she's desperate to find out what happens next.
