South London Online Home-Ed Groups?

Hello everyone,

All my children, apart from my eldest who is now at Secondary, are now back out of school, having been in for a year or so. When I was last in the throes of home-ed, there were yahoo groups in my area (South-East London), but I wanted to check if the world has moved on since then Grin and if so, where is now the best place to connect with my local network.

TIA Thanks

It has moved on a bit - there are still Yahoo and Google groups - but lots of Facebook groups as well. If you do a Facebook search for London and home ed you should get suggestions. Do you have the details for the Yahoo/Google groups still? If you can get to Streatham on a Friday then home ed ice-skating is a good place to start to meet people and find out what other groups they go to.

Thank you, lily fire. We used to go to the Brixton Ice-Skating Group a couple of years ago.

I'll have a look on Facebook. We already have a couple of home-ed families we're very close to, but neither has a 'match' for my 8 year old son, whom I would love to find a friend for. We're in SE15. What time and how much is the Streatham ice-Skating?

Hi here are details of ice skating group. Will also PM you about other stuff we do

Home edders get a discount (see below), but the session is a public one.

It's a really great inclusive day out for any age - including parents/grandparents - and a big age range do come regularly. A very nice way to 'break the ice' and meet others, with something to do at the same time as being quite a chat-friendly activity. Lots of space off the ice, too, and a cafe.

Time: From 11am - 3.30pm every Friday during school term-time, with entry any time up to 3pm.

Cost: It costs £5.10 per child, and one adult per 'group' of children (a group can be just one child) can hire skates and have a lesson for free.
Be aware that if more than one adult accompanies a group, the 'extra' adults may be asked to pay the normal admittance fee, now £6.60, plus skate hire (if necessary) of £2. You may want to split your group between carers.

Signing in: We need to show how many people attend the home ed skating each week to prove our entitlement to lessons and to give the teacher a list of how many people would like each lesson (beginners, intermediate, or advanced), so that she knows what to expect.

The list is in a blue clipboard, and you can usually find me (Olivia) or Emma somewhere around near the first seats of the stand on the right hand side, near the skate hire.

PLEASE will everyone sign in -- both as a headcount, and if you would like a lesson?

Lesson: Please be aware that if people want to join the lesson they must be at the rink before 1pm.

Beginners: There are penguin skate aids for very young skaters - a model penguin with handles, to push around on the ice (at a cost of £3 per half-hour.)

There is ample seating to watch the skaters, but it can be cold if you're not on the ice! Bring warm clothes.

Food: There is no problem with bringing picnic lunch. (There is an enormous Tesco supermarket next door to the rink, or Morrisons 100yds up the road) Bring lots of water; there is no drinking fountain at the rink.

Please note, Streatham say there is NO readmittance once you're in the centre (so no nipping out to get a picnic...).

Responsible adults: We appreciate that older children may not need constant supervision; nevertheless could every skater have someone in the role of 'responsible adult' in case of emergencies or accidents, please?

Public transport: the centre is 3 minutes' walk from Streatham (rail) station. The walk to Streatham Common is a bit longer. There is information about other transport to the centre on their website: www.better.org.uk/leisure/streatham-ice

Parking: those who come by car can ask for a parking voucher at reception, which will halve the cost of the car park. Alternatively you can park for free in local streets. PLEASE BE AWARE THAT IF YOU PARK IN THE CENTRE CAR PARK FOR MORE THAN 4 HOURS YOU WILL BE CHARGED £80!!!! So if you come by car for the whole event, park locally on the streets, where it is free.

I believe if you spend more than £5 in Tesco you get free parking for 3 hours.

For any other information about the centre, please see:
