Singing at home!!

Hi, I'd like to do some more singing at home with my 5 and nearly 3 year olds. I'm wary of getting those nursery song type cd things as I'm sure the annoying voices on them would drive me mad!

Does anyone have any ideas about what to sing along to - they love some adult stuff as well but I would like to be able to play some songs and have the words available so that we can learn some stuff together and have a good old singalong.

Any ideas/product info appreciated.

Hi Elf

We too love singing, and sing a lot around ds (2 years 4 months), who now sings and requests songs too. I love watching/hearing him discover music.

When ds was 1, I bought the CBeebies CD, which has been a hit in the car since. But it drives me crazy after a (short) while, and is more than a bit limited in style, so we've played lots of our own favourites, especially in the car, which had him requesting Sinatra's "Under My Skin" and Vivaldi's "Four Seasons" at 20 months.

Since putting our whole music collection into iTunes over the summer, ds has had his own growing playlists (one upbeat, one chilled-out), which include a whole range of songs. He'll sit on the sofa for half-an-hour just listening to the songs. Current favourites include The Eagles' "Heartache Tonight", The Carpenters' "Mr Postman" (loves this), and The Beatles' "Let It Be". I'd recommend setting up an iTunes playlist; it makes it very easy to isolate and access the songs you think they'll enjoy.

If you want to have a good old sing song together, you might like to try getting hold of the first book in the Voiceworks series. It's a big fat book full of simply arranged, well known folk/pop/spiritual songs, layed out with words, melody, TAB and chords in an easy key. A lot of them are designed for easy peasy harmonising, and there's one arrangement, which includes Michael Finnigan, where the three of you would sing three different well-known songs which all harmonise together. Lots of a capella fun, in an easy format. It's designed as a schools resource, though, so not cheap; about £40, I think.

HTH, and happy singing.

Some good cheap box sets of more classic stuff around for Christmas. Stuff from musicals is great DD got one for her Christmas last year and is full of old favorites.

We have singstar for the playstation too, perhaps yours are too young for that. We get it out when the PIL are here ad they love all the oldies on it. There are other Kareoke type systems vthat show the wors on the screen.

Not sure where else you can get music and words.

I can really recommend Dan Zanes - he has produced a number of CDs with guests like Lou Reed, Suzanne Vega etc and we love them all. there are lots of sing a long songs on there and - - I don't get bored with them.other than that I would just play the music you like to sing along to. I am not a big believer in a divide between music for children and for adults, tbh.

Thanks everyone for your ideas - that is a help. I had wanted to get the words so that we could singalong 'properly' - anyone know of a website which gives song words? Maybe it is all copyright problems. Anyway, I love the ideas and shall go and look at the leads soon - thanks.

and the xmas one

and rather a lot of other things

Wow, thanks Filly, I've only had time to have a quick perusal but that first tape looks like good fun and I think I will get it. What a great website, I'll look at the other stuff properly later too.

Last night I saw a TV advert for a Country and Western CD which looked great actually, and it's got I Beg Your Pardon on it which my older two love already.

Thanks again.
