Out-of-school tutoring

I am a tutor, and I'm quite busy during the after-school hours, but twiddling my thumbs during the school hours. I love my work and I found myself wondering if there's a need for tutors for children who are at home recovering from illness or injury, or who have moved but not yet found a school place. After all, life events don't occur in accordance with school calendars!

Does anyone have advice on this idea? I'm not sure how to get in contact with such families.

I think children recovering from illness receive funded tuition through the LA don't they? Perhaps they could point you in the right direction.

If I were you, I'd just advertise on the usual sites people use to find tutors.

When I needed a French tutor, I hit Google for local tutors, then phoned around to find one who could do the hours we wanted. Same with music teachers.

HE families needing a tutor find them in the usual way, then work out hours.

Offering cheaper rates for school ours wouldn't do any harm Grin.

The take up rate might depend on your subject though, music and language tutors are popular with many HE families; English, Maths, History less so, as most people are able to cope with teaching those.

I work as a home tutor for these types students, Mary. And not at a discounted rate.

Can you please tell me how you found your way into this line of work?

I heard about it through a friend. I'm employed by County and I know they're recruiting at the moment. Pay is excellent although I have a zero hour contract so no guarantee of work. I am also on a bank of staff for a PRU. Where do you live? What phase and, if secondary, which subject?

How about approaching Interhigh and briteschool, both online secondary schools.
