How do I work out a plan to be approved by education authority?

I would like to HE my 5 year old DS, currently in year 1 at local primary.

We live on an island, so education authority have different requirements to English LEAs. They want to see a plan for HE and to have 'exhausted all other options', including proving this after a meeting with education authority and head teacher, before they will allow removal from school.

Any suggestions as to how to come up with this?

well, I suppose a lot depends on what you want. For example if you want a traditional curriculum, or if you have an alternative view of education that you want to follow.

if you want a more traditional approach, then lots of website have outlines of suggested curricula, the UK National Curriculum is on-line, so that is a starting point.

I would guess that few of us on this forum will have experience of writing a plan for approval by the education authority, since that isn't required in England or Wales and I think most of us live in those countries. So we might not be the best people to ask. Perhaps you could find some examples if you get in touch with Scottish home educators, because they do require LA approval to deregister from school, and have to submit a plan as well I think.

Will you need to give regular updates to the education authority in future? Do you know whether it is straightforward to change your approach if you discover that what you originally tried is not right for your child after all?

That business of having "exhausted all other options" sounds somewhat challenging, so you might need to take advice locally. I seem to remember you mentioning on another post that there are a handful of other people home educating on your island; have you asked them how they tackled that?

There is no "UK national curriculum" - there are different approaches in the different nations. Is your island in Scotland? If so the four basic principles of the curriculum for excellence are easy to find online and suitable for home ed.

Thank you all for your replies. 'Exhausting all options' is the bit that worries me too.
I have made contact with a local HEing mum and am going to meet her and see what she did.
