Who do I have to inform if I'm taking DS out of year 6?

I'm planning on taking DS out of school for the summer term and HS. Who do I need to inform? I plan to have some academic work each day plus opportunity for play, swimming and trips.

Not sure what I'm legally obliged to do.

He will be returning to school for year 7

If in England, then just the school he is at. A letter to the head saying you will be educating otherwise as from xx date xx. You don't need to tell the school any plans you have about what you will be teaching. The school will then inform the local authority.

I like the idea of an extended break before secondary school. He will miss out on doing SATS, or is that the point. The secondary school may get him to do some kinds of tests when he starts so that they know what stream to put him in.

Thanks maggi, he's at an Indi now so I don't think they do SATS. They spend most of the summer term with a play, sports day, swimming gala etc and its only a short term (end of April til July 13th) don't really want to pay the fees for this term where he won't actually learn much.

Sounds like a good idea!

Here is some more legal information about removing a child from school in England, including a sample letter: www.educationotherwise.net/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=77&Itemid=69

The school may or may not inform the LA. Private schools sometimes don't. If the LA does find out you are HEing, they may wish to visit your home, see samples of work etc. None of that is a legal requirement, so you don't have to go along with it unless you want to. If you want help to draft letters to them, just post again!

Have fun.

Wow!, you have been a fantastic help. This is why I love MN.
Looking forward to some quality time before my boy goes to big school.
