Does anyone know where I can buy folders like this in the UK (preferably online) to turn into lapbooks? I can't find them anywhere.

Hi

I asked about lapbooks other day.

thread watcher was most helpful with links .
they still very american so was hard oto find uk bases stuff.
i googled and kept coming up with prefilled lapbooks when I wanted blank.

i looked on pinterest yesterday was really helpful as can visually see what people have done.

so on weekend im going to attempt to make 3blank lapbooks.

The most basic i can see is

4square sides a4 joined up and folded.
pop up pic.
layers of writing like a ladder of post it notes
seen something that looks like square peice paper folded looks like something we made when i was in school so will give a go.

I dont think mine will be amazing but will be cheap and do the job.
as long as can fit all content in.

we been doing 3projects

butterflies
spain
want to do olympics too next week.

but my dd is 6 so will keep it simple essentioal facts
keep it bright and colourful.
lots of pics.

Im quite crafty so see it as fun challange,

im getting

2cardboard folders glued together to create 4sides
papper plain and lined for writing
post in notes
drawing pin as thinking doing a a circle that rotates.

good luck

When you say 'cardboard folders', what sort of folders are you using, mam? I wonder if it's impossible to get the folders here that are mentioned on US websites. Good idea to look at pinterest - I'll check that out for ideas. Good luck with your lapbooks!

well the folders I had in mind.

hard to tell from pic and can get way cheaper
www.ryman.co.uk/0397090007/Square-Cut-Folders-Pack-of-100/Product

the cardbaord folders that just like huge cards one you would use in filing cabinets or boxes. I would take 2of those folders.
cut around sto they straight and square. then glue or take the 2folders together so teh base has 2sheets a4 at bottom and one either side in teh front what I would call doors.
A3 might be better but unsure if they do in a3 but again could make with 4sheets a4.

from what i seen so far some are complex but some relativly simple

a ladder of post it notes glued with text on
some pouches or pockets

seeing on pinterest made it look much simpler, less daunting and complex.

as log as you can find a way to add every thing you wish to add.

theres some tutorials on you tube too.

its a very personal things think good use of colour will help.
lots pics drawings and photos.

Also think about what you want to put in them.

I think tehy work well when its small specific topics ie birds, ladybords , olypics ect,.

ToffeeWhirl · 15/08/2012 11:32

Brilliant, thanks. Those are much more like the lapbook folders described on websites. Thanks to your link, I have tracked down these, which will suit me fine. Thanks so much for your help.

What we do is just get ordinary cardboard A4 folders and staple them together to make a lapbook shape. We have some that are made of 2, 3 or 4 folders all joined together.

mam29 · 19/08/2012 08:30

Found this helpful and free.

sslrelay.com/catalogue.ichthusresources.co.uk/subjects/lapbooking/lapbookinginfosheet.pdf

at moment we have 4projects we want to turn into laptops.
been doing the info bit already so just have to construct the the lapbooks at end of hols.

The olypics one is huge so wondering if should mayeb try make a3size. or just extra add on and foldables.

ToffeeWhirl · 19/08/2012 09:14

Thanks, stressedHEmum.

mam29 - that's a really useful article - thanks for that.

No worries was pleased to stumble upon it myself the itaachus books does books on lapbooking too.

I still cant wait to make a start on our.
have looked at many pics on pinterest.

hoping to have

pop up pics
line post its with useful info
maybe a large square with corner folded into triangles.
a large piece of paper folded into concertina-like making a fan that spread out and down.
hoping this week to

complete butterflies-going to butterfly farm

start olympics-yesterday brought telegraph as had a olympics souvineer mag with loads of lovley pics that can cut out and stick into it.

continue with spain-go travel agents pick up some free brochures for some nice colour pics of spain-guess could do same if doing other countries.

to keep costs down

im going to poundland next week to get

plain paper

folder
cards
glue
tape
new pencils.
stapler
tracing paper
those drawing pins that allow things to move they gold and wire sticks out that way can add a circle that can spin round
plastic wallets-cut out and taped to make secure pockets

as think could be done on cheap.

im hoping just spending about 10-15quid can make about 5lapbooks art least.

im sure I will get better with practice.

I love the concept cant understand why schools dont use them.

think its quite american,

ThreadWatcher · 19/08/2012 16:07

Hi
Thanks for saying I posted helpful info mam29 - its nice to be appreciated :)

I use the folders you can get from Staples (an annual trip for various supplies is fun!) these
So I got a pack of red, a pack of purple, a pack of green and a pack of yellow - 50 in each pack = 200.
So yes I have a mountain of them but it was the cheapest way to buy all four colours. We also use them a lot in different of ways.......... And I still have a hill two years on :o

as folders for their work - with treasury tags. To do this I normally cut the bottom cm or so off to make them not so big.
as folders for lapbooks - to do this you can use them as they are or open them out and fold each half to the middle crease.

These folders arent exactly the same as the US ones but similar enough.

Home Bargains (hopefully one near you?) often have a stack of rolls of sticky backed plastic really cheap (79p a roll?) which I use to cover the front and back cover when finished.

mam29 · 19/08/2012 16:45

was really grateful for advice thread watchers
I really need to get new printer sorted as theres quite a bit on pinterest

free lapbook materials on olympics and other tops that could be printed and added to the laptop things like fact sheets, colour in sheets.

im quite visual so it helped to see many examples to get my head around it as t fisrt glance its looks complicated says shes whos not actually made one yet!

lol at the 200folders.sounds like you sorted for a while.

sounds like you have enough supplies.

any ideas on the add ons some looks like complicated origami!

must say this board is quite but been so freindly and learnt so much.

ThreadWatcher · 19/08/2012 18:20

For the add on bits and complicated looking folding doo dahs I have only used something bought and printed from currclick.
I have never designed my own lapbook (I lack the space in my brain right now) and actually havent done more than a couple in the lapbook style format.

As I said on the other lapbook thread I prefer the stuff I have got through my sub to teacher file box/evan moor. I print all sorts of bits from there and activity village.
Then we end up with a file folder with a bunch of A4 papers secured inside then on the front and back inside cover we stick little books (evan moor loves little books) with more stuff glued on front and back outside cover.

The problem for me with commercial lapbooks (from Hands of a child/journey through learning etc on Currclick) was that soooooo often you are printing a hexagon thingy on a piece of paper/card and the rest of the page is wasted. If using card (for durabilty) this gets expensive (and wasteful).
Evan moor materials make a much better use of the page (and for me the quality of info and art work is better)

Also try looking for 'file folder games' - same sort of thing as lapbooks.

It has taken me three years of HE to learn that when Americans say 'brads' they mean treasury tags............!

mam29 · 19/08/2012 21:14

I meant to ask -whats a treasury tag?

always find it odd how american say things differently,

why do they say home school and not home ed?
why math instead of maths?

Theres so much american material but very little british.

I assume as its because uk more autonomous and more structures.

Also heavily faith based curriculum over there often wonder how some demoninations teach sceince and creation?

I think they invented the lapbooking so loads over there.

been reading the well trained mind forum-they sound so busy and have really lon g complicated curriculums.dont know how they fit it all in.

im quite creative if put my mind to it.
love the concept so hope I get better over time.
am in aw at quality of some I have seen,

ThreadWatcher · 19/08/2012 21:42

treasury tags/brads - those green things normally about 2-3cm long with a wee stick on each end

There is way more stuff specifically for HErs that is American simply because more of them have been HEing for a lot longer.
I think HE in this country often seems a lot more autonomous but a lot of that is an impression based on who you mingle with/websites you visit etc.

I love doing crafty stuff but Im not much good at designing and creating ideas for myself - I prefer following instructions or emulating what they have done.

mam29 · 27/08/2012 09:26

Just thourght I update you.

I havent manged to get to poundland, whsmith or staples.

went round newsagent other day brought

large a3 paper book but quite strong paper-not card
glue
tape
post its
black scrap paper a4.

I have folded 2sheets of a3 down middle to make 4sides if a4 either side.

I have then made it triple layered by attaching black paper either side so needed 8sheets of the black paper.

so it looked like I had made 2large a4 cards.

I then taped the 2 together and staples them.

so the laptop has 8sides either side.

we went to butterfly farm yesterday and got double sides factsheet.
so i put that in pollypocket and taped that in as extra 5page inside.

I cut out the lifecycle and tried to make a foldable looks bit messy.
dd put some butterfly stickers we brought from shop on front cover and post card on back.

I staged the buttrefly pics in a row like a ladded and used tape.

have done same with postits which she needs to write on.

Thnk going to try acordian fold.
small pocket book.
envelpope
pop up butterfly

it starting to take shape hoping looks of for 1st attempt.
just underestinated amount of materials and time will take.
now im worried about format and enough content.

Im sure I will get better at it .
