Hi all,

My daughter wants to take an English IGCSE, do I need to do both language and literature? When colleges specify English as a requirement, which do they mean?

I have been trawling the edexcel website, they offer English Language A or B.
Syllabus A is 2 exams less emphasis on grammar I think. B is one exam.

Does it make any difference, should she do the one I think will be easier to pass.

They also offer English Literature which seems to have elements of English language contained. In the long run will it matter, I dont want to waste her time. My head is melting!

Thanks for reading.

Colleges usually mean English Language. If they actually want Lit instead of or aswell, they tend to specify it. If you only want one, I'd go for Language every time.

Colleges mean English Language however in the ordinary GCSE (I don't know about IGCSE). If your daughter is good at English then it is worth while doing Lit too. In the ordinary GCSE there is a crossover element with the coursework and similar skills are used (comparing) in both exams therefore it might be worth taking both. It would mean 2 GCSEs (good ones) for the price of one. I used to be an English teacher + GCSE marker.

Usually they mean language but we did both. It won't make any difference which spec you do; the certificate won't say. Just choose the one you think will suit her best.
