Dyscalculia?

Has any one got any tips for teaching a 13 year old with dyscalculia?, I'm home schooling until september and he's finding maths really stressful. My plan at the moment is to use the primary maths games sites but he also has aspergers and hates being patronised. His main problem seems to be retaining what he's learnt so I think he needs repetition but it's hard and I don't think his school has really addressed his issues with maths, as they focused on his dyselxia.

I always find the tes website brilliant for resources, they are age specific and have work for specific learning difficulties. I'm not sure if you use this or not. You need to register if you want to download resources but only takes a min. The forums are quite good too and I have posted in many and had positive responses. My dd had Mathletics through school, but perhaps too young for your ds. Although, it isn't expensive.

look for books by ronit bird -here

Mathletics does cover secondary - we are thinking about it for my DD who is 15 and has dyscalculia. I think it looks pretty good but it does depend on what your DS likes.

Hi there. I tutor many adults and children with dyscalculia. I would definitely recommend the ronit bird books.

If you want to send me specific questions please feel free to do so or you can have a read of my www.adrianbeckett.co.uk/category/dyscalculia/.

I advise that before doing any secondary maths you make sure your son has the basics. You can do this in a unpatronising way. My experience generally has been that those students with dyscalculia who feel they are making progress albeit when it is quite slow enjoy the learning.

He needs to learn the following:
timetables
number bonds to 10
how to bridge to 10
how to add small numbers
how to subtract small numbers
how to subtract from multiples of 10
how to subtract from a multiple of 10
how to add a 2 digit number and a 1 digit number
how to read the time

Hope that helps
